Grass catcher trailer
http://ift.tt/1HFFJ5B I bought a mower and didnt really think about needing a grass catcher. Well, i did need oneso I looked around and didnt want to spend $3-400 on one for a mower that i might only keep for a few years. I started browsing and used some ideas from various sites. I used the trailer i got from HF and built a removable box in it. I was able to find a 8" tube on Ebay to go over the chute coming from the mower deck for about $65. I also got the chute as well for about $40 on Amazon. I just kind of built it with some ideas in my head and had to redo things a few times but it turned out ok. It works amazingly well and holds a ton of grass. I did go too long between the last mow and some areas of the yard were at least 10" and the tube did get clogged once due to me going to fast and there being to much grass for it to handle. Right now i am just opening the back door and pulling out the grass with rack. I am trying to figure out the best way to be able to tilt and dump it. I am thinking maybe just to undo the bungee cords holding the tube to the chute and separate those while i dump the grass. I spent about $120 on stuff i didnt have so i saved a bit on buying a actual bagger and its more fun building something yourself. Feel free to give my ideas to improve it!!

Refinishing Coffee Table - When the hell do I stop sanding?
I put a hot pizza onto my coffee table and ruined it. I always wanted to try and refinish something and decided to start with this table.
So I have spent 2 Sundays sanding it with an 80 grit palm sander. My question is, when do I stop. I know I am supposed to remove all the finish, but the deep wood grain stain doesn't seem to be going anywhere after a point. I have some pics below for comparison. Should I keep sanding? What should it look like when I stop, completely "white"? Should I try a chemical stripper? I have not picked out a new color stain yet.
Thanks.

Does this DIY house plan sound ridiculous?
I want to buy one lot 1/2 mile inland of the NJ coast where I can slowly build a small two-story summer, over the next 5 years. Very minimal: electricity, minimal plumbing, septic system, but no hot water, and no basement. My plan is to drop a locked storage shed to keep tools and materials, and drive down periodically to build, living out of a tent while I'm there. I currently own a home, I'm very good with tools, but I have no idea how the rest of it works. I'm not ready to talk budget but I'm not worried about money, I'm worried about logistics. For example, can I just camp out like in a tent? Will it be tough to get my own permits? etc
I'm sure it all sounds naive, but this is my current fantasy. Fire away...

Help with circular retaining wall on very sloped yard
My backyard slopes at a pretty large angle but I have a Crape Myrtle tree that I really want to re-build a retaining wall around. I built one a while back but it was unstable and the soil/sand mixture I used to built up the lower part (unsuprisingly) did not stand up very long. The bricks separated and it looks like crap now.
My thought this time was dig deeper but there are what seems like integral roots just below the surface. How should I go about doing this? Any way to functionally build up the lower section in a way that will last through time & weather?
Here are some pictures from the first time I did the wall so you can see the slope (and how I would ultimately like it to look). Also, I know now not to fill-in with soil and have removed all of that.
Thanks!

Need help with a tire swing. Can you help me find a heavy load swivel?
See images here: Imgur -- Imgur
I put in a tractor tire swing and tried to overbuild it, as we have 4 crazy kids and they all have crazy friends. We've had as many as 14 little guys on the swing at a time. So, I tried to find a swivel that would allow the swing to spin. This one worked well for a few years, then as it's been used over time, the swivel has almost frozen up. There has to be a swivel out there that can take a lot of weight and still spin.
GOAL: Give the tire swing the ability to swing and swivel with a load. Usual load would be 3 children. Max load - 400lbs - I'd like to find something that will accomplish the goal with the max load, for the least amount of money.
I was thinking something like this: http://ift.tt/1FUg0tm
But I'm not smart enough to know if this is correct for the application, or how to read the weight abilities of the unit.
Any recommendations?
TIA.

I have an old US Army Humvee jack. I need help getting it back to working condition!
The pictures will be in the comments. I'm new to reddit and I still don't understand why it's so difficult to post things.
I found two old Humvee jacks in a shed from a unit that deactivated a while ago so I'm not sure how long they've been in there. I got most of the rust off with a metal brush and some CLR but the I can't get it to raise. The metal rod down the center twists but the joints won't move. I thought it may have bc it was dirty so I really cleaned out around the joints but I didn't have any luck. I don't see how grease or lubricant would help since id imagine the problem was inside where the screws our themselves. I have the arm bar btw. Any help would be great.

Help needed upgrading my storage cage security.
I'm quickly getting tired of the scum who keep knocking it off. The first time, they bolt cut the chain and lock and stole that too! (Among a plethora of other goodies)
This time, after failing the lock and chain, they went through the mesh. (Pictured)
There's a couple pictures attached which I'll explain now. 1. Left of the cage. The hinges to the door have previously been pried around to get the nuts off from behind. Removing the door entirely. http://ift.tt/1KEf13i
- The bolts going into the slab can be undone taking the entire wall down. http://ift.tt/1LPRU3B http://ift.tt/1KEf13m
These two issues I planned to fix with a tack from a arc or mig.
-
The mesh I had planned to secure with galv sheets. http://ift.tt/1KEf2V4
-
The lock would be replaced with a d style motorcycle lock.
However, I can think of many ways to still break into this without much difficulty. One of the other cages has been built out with a timber frame internal and lined with form ply.
I thought of doing this, but lack all the tools (they knocked them off too!)
Any recommendations on locks, doors, or alternatives is greatly appreciated!!!

My Refrigerator is leaking and I'm stuck as to what is the cause. Took some photos for experts to take a look at.
So as you can see in the photos it's leaking from within the fridge section in the top left corner. It pools up under the crispers. This an old Amana TX18JW. I couldn't even google it to find it. I did find a photo of a similar looking fridge, and some of the things I've read would lead me to believe there is some drain that is clogged.
However, after removing the freezer panel I did not see a drain like this and only saw what's in this photo. I'm not sure if that's what the fridge should look like or not.
Thanks for all the help. Really trying to hold this beast together.

Help! new addition suggestions needed
I'm doing a 2 floor addition to my house and need help wit a bit of a situation. The first floor is already built and even with the existing house.
The second floor of the existing house has 2x10 joists and for the new addition I have to use 2x12 to cover the span.
Easiest thing would be to chop 2 inches off the height of the first floor ceiling but I am hesitant to do that because its the kitchen/dining area and I want a nice open feel.
Anyone have any brilliant ideas on hiding a 2" height gap or am I just fussing over a non issue?

What would have you done? (to either me or the other guy) Story below. serious
Okay so I was dumpster diving (it gets better), and I happened upon a few computer components. thinking nothing of it I began to take apart an a.p.c I had found (adevices designed to keep your electronics on in a power failure). My battery had failed in mine and finding a replacement was very fortuitous. Unfortunately the previous owner of the equipment was less than happy I was riffling through his things. he polity asked me to fuck off (not polite). I did as I had my dog at the time and wanted to get her home. I returned later for the battery as I really did not think anything of it the interaction I live in a bad part of town and its not the first time I've been cussed out. Well sure enough Mr.Happy Showed up again to discuss his displeasure with my actions. I asked who I was hurting as he was throwing the a.p.c away anyway and he said I was hurting him. I then said I just wanted the battery and he said he did not want anyone trying to steal his identity (apparently he had thrown out papers of some kind) and he got in my face and said stop messing with my stuff I said no and he backed off (it could have been the taser I had pressed against his corroded artery or the threat of its discharge, but who knows :) ) I then told him my name and said I just wanted the battery and he let me have it. explaining he was sorry and I apologized as well and thanked him for the battery and came home. The question is here what should have I done differently if anything and was I wright or wrong for even trying to get the battery. I get the whole identity thing and were he was coming from but it was going to go to waste . how would have you handled it?

Looking for the loudest portable speakers I can find
I am trying to find any speaker that I will be able to connect my phone that will be loud enough to play music on the beach or on a soccer field. The speakers needs to be powered by a battery of some sort also. I am curious if anything like this even exists?

Drilling multiple holes within 1/2" on wood studs? HELP! Messed up my kitchen!
I made a mistake installing the suspension rail on my Ikea kitchen. The entire rail needs to be shifted by half an inch, which means that I will be drilling another hole less than 1/2 inch away from the original hole. The studs have been compromised. Will this be okay to support the weight of the cabinets and granite countertop?

Well, it's finally happened: my Drobo died. Time to get a new NAS.
And by Drobo, I mean the ORIGINAL Drobo. While I mourn it's passing, I'm also looking forward to see what kind of NAS technology is out there these days.
I'd like something that can function as a true NAS, with built-in gigabit ethernet interfaces. The ability to have either redundant interfaces or (miracle of miracles) bonded interfaces for extra bandwidth would be nice as well. I'd like to have at least five drives and the ability to run in multiple RAID configurations, at least RAID 5. Rack-mountable would be a plus.
So, any suggestions out there?

Best Laptop under $500? Need advice
Hello, I'm looking to buy a new laptop for my mom because the one she has now fried last night. My mom runs a shop on Etsy and it's hard to do without her laptop. She doesn't do any demanding activities just internet use and word documents so it doesn't have to be anything crazy but I would still like it to run smoothly to minimize her stress like she had with the previous. It does need to have Wi-Fi capabilities and she would prefer windows 7 since that's what she has now. I would like to buy today and keep it local such as Best Buy/Frys but if there's a good deal online I'll look at that too. Also doesnt have to be $500 can be less. Thank you in advanced.

are smaller pieces of wood less likely to crack?
Hey DIYers... have a wood question. I have a stump/round chunk of wood that I'm hoping to carve a little something out of. Problem is, rounds crack. I would prefer to start carving asap, but I don't want my finished piece to crack. Do I have to wait months for the wood to dry and crack so I can choose an uncracked section of the wood to start carving, or can I go ahead and carve now with any part and if the end result is small (say, the size of a bar of soap or so), it'll be so small as to be able to dry without cracking?
Intuitively, it seems to me that smaller pieces of wood won't crack because there's less movement as the wood dries, but I don't know if that's actually true.
thanks!

[Help] Cleaning anti-slip floor
Hello everyone,
First of all thank you for clicking on my post and possibly helping me with my problem.
This is the case: I work in a machining factory, we produce auto parts. Recently, management opted for anti-slip floors. The floors are almost like sandpaper, very coarse. It can only be cleaned by scrubbing very hard, which takes a lot of time and isn't efficient.
Do you've experience with this problem or do you've a solution. Please help me.
Thanks in advance.
Sorry if this is posted in the wrong sub-reddit.

Restoring an old chimney (need advice from you DIY redditors)
I am doing some home renos on my new place and uncovered this beautiful, but dirty, chimney running up through two floors. The problem is that there is the gunk (rust + tar?) running down it. How would you suggest I remove it? I can try to sand it but then I would have to do the whole thing. Is there any type of over-the-counter acid or something that might work? Thanks!!

[Gadget Needed] Someone invent/create this please. :)
I'm usually just a lurker but I'm popping out of hiding for this one. My SO asked me to find a gadget that was easily portable with good enough graphics and WiFi for the purposes of streaming Netflix. He doesn't want a phone or a tablet, however. My search was futile as there are plenty of notebooks, TV top boxes or plugins, but nothing that's just dedicated to Neflix streaming. Someone build this thing, please?

[SERIOUS] Using concrete for a pet burial
I've looked into cremation but the pricing is around $275-$300. I live in an apartment so I don't have a backyard. This may sound mad but could I use concrete mix to create a sort of container for her body? I thought of using a pot in the shape of an urn maybe? This way when I move I can bring her with me. She is fairly small. How would I go about doing it? My worry is trying to keep her within the center as it sets so no part of her is seen from any sides. its been 16 hours since she passed
