Could I use a mattress topper to make a upholstered headboard?

The foam for the head board seems to be the most expensive part. My sister is getting rid of her sultan mattress from ikea. And she was using a mattress topper on it. I think they are both made of some kind of foam. Would that be good to use when making the headboard? Has anyone ever used either in a project like this?

Advice needed - how to clean up or cover up the sides of concrete slab in front of fireplace

Hello DIY - I have a home improvement project I desperately need help with.

I have a fireplace in my basement. When I purchased my home, the basement was unfinished (concrete floor, no drywall, etc). I have since finished it by putting up drywall and installing laminate flooring (fake hardwood / "pergo" type flooring). However, the one eyesore that remains is the concrete slab that sits in front of the fireplace (apologies for not knowing the name of it) - it is approximately 60 inches by 20 inches.

I've seen other fireplaces where the rest of the floor rises up to meet the top of this slab; however, in my home it does not. The flooring sits 1.5 - 1.75 inches below the top of this slab. And the sides of it are VERY rough around the edges. I am looking for advice on how to cover up the ugly sides of this concrete slab.

Is there any sort of known, typical item that can be installed on the siding of it? Hopefully easily? (I'm not super handy myself). Below are pictures that should help you visualize my problem.
