Need Advice: Coffee Table with Cushion Inserts

I have this coffee table that is designed to hold 2 pieces of glass. I decided that instead of glass, I wanted to insert cushions in to make it a coffee table/ottoman combo. My original plan was have a piece of wood board cut to size, add batting and staple fabric to the backside of the wood. The board would insert into where you would place the glass. Then my husband got a great idea of being able to flip the cushion over so we can have a flat service if we ever need just the coffee table version. The cushion would insert into the whole and the board would lay flush with the rest of the table. This is where I am stuck. The foam cushion would have to be smaller than the board in order to be able to fit it inside the table, but I'm not sure of the best way to attach the cushion and fabric.

Any advice and suggestions are appreciated!

Thank you!
