Need help/ideas for fixing a gutted shower faucet housing.

So, my shower's kinda terrible. Before I go on, I apologize if I'm not using the right names for things. I do not claim to be a plumber.

A complaint to my landlord about getting the mechanism fixed that switched the water flow from the spigot to the shower resulted in the picture that you are about to see. She had another tenant (a plumber by profession) come by to take a look at it and his repairs are what you see here.

I want to fix the wall so that water doesn't just...fall into my wall. Again, I am not a plumber nor am I an expert in home improvement, but I need to fashion some sort of a semi-permanent solution that keeps water out of the hole, right? Right.

So, suggestions? I have some tools, I'm willing to spend a little bit of money, and I don't want to rebuild the entire wall.
