Non-artist/crafty-type in need of some help/tips with a photo-transfer to canvas project.

My wife is ridiculously talented when it comes to DIY, art, & crafty projects, and she gives the best homemade gifts. I, on the other hand, suck with art and crafty-type projects. This year, I'm going to try and impress her with a little photo-transfer gift that I will be handling on my own (you guys, she's gonna flip when she sees I did something crafty!).

I have read plenty of tutorials and watched a few youtube videos, but I still have one question. Do I need to get a separate sealer (mod podge) for the end product, or will the gel medium work to seal it? It's going to be a pretty big canvas (24" x 36") and I will be using a color print for the image.

Also, if you have any other tips from past experiences to make this project go more smoothly, I would REALLY appreciate it! Thanks in advance!
