Reddit DIY'ers I just bought a circular saw to start woodworking with, I feel like I've made a big mistake...

I just bought a Black and Decker Circular Saw after reading a handful of posts and websites for beginners which told me it was the perfect tool for amateurs. On my first project though it's too big to cut the thin wood I wanted to use. Should I have bought a mitre saw instead which seems to be able to cut thick and thin wood? What projects can I do with a circular saw? Help and advice would be appreciated!

I'd be interested in making Shelves and Picture frames with the tool at first.
