Anyone have good guidance on a whole house sediment style water filter?

I'm redoing my whole house, and I'm getting near the point of doing all the water. I would like to put in a basic sediment filter mainly to try to catch some of the crap that's in the pipes. I'm live with good city water, so this is mainly to reduce the picked up metals, etc.... Don't need a softener or anything like that. Any recommendations or general advice?

I will be putting in a charcoal filter in for drinking water, and hadn't planned on putting a whole house one in, but I can be convinced otherwise if there is a good reason for it.
