I have inherited my grandfather's footlocker from his time in the Navy. I don't remember where it was being stored at my grandparents' house, but obviously there was moisture around and the metal bits have all since rusted.
I'm trying to figure out the best method of cleaning the metal up. I have a Dremel, but I haven't used it for a restoration project yet, so I'm not sure of the best way to do this. The worst part is that the lock doesn't close, but I haven't mucked with it very much. Thankfully I do have the key, should I get it closed.
As for the rest, I'm thinking probably just going to damp cloth pat it down, as I don't want to repaint and lose his name from the lid. The interior is largely fine, so I don't plan on doing anything to it other than maybe drop a charcoal satchel in to absorb some of the odor (not bad, just noticeable).
As the title states, tips and advice would be welcome!
