I have a 750 sq ft house in upstate NY. There is currently NO insulation in the walls whatsoever and the current siding is beat to hell. My end goal is to tear off all the existing siding down to the studs, insulate, and put new siding on. I've gotten several quotes for this job but the lowest was $12k, which seems excessive for such a small home.
Since it looks like I'll be doing the work myself to save money, I'm hoping to get some advice from people who have done this kind of project before. What kind of insulation should I use? I hear foam is the best but also very expensive. I understand that isoboard is the second best, but is it worth it?
As for siding, is there a particular brand that is good? I've heard contractors hem and haw over the dangers of siding that's not thick enough to withstand minor impacts. And what about trim? Should I use vinyl trim?
At the moment, all my understanding comes from book learning. I would love to get some REAL advice from experienced people who have gone through this process already. I don't have a firm budget for the project, but less than $12k would be preferable.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions. :)
