Trying to figure out how to cover my patio

Hey DIY,

My family and I are moving in to our new home in a few weeks, so I am getting my to-do list going so I can knock out as much as possible before all of our furniture is in.

One of the first things I want to do is cover our patio. We live in Houston where it is summer 8 months out of the year, and it rains once every three days. So, shade and cover are necessary. The previous owners put in this paver brick patio. I am going to leave the patio, and I think I need to tie in to the existing roof (also shown in the link).

Here are some of my questions:

• How would I tie in to the roof? And what should I know before trying to do that

• What might be the best way to anchor into the ground? I was thinking these 6" sonotube fittings with these 4" carport saddles

• I was planning on using pine and sealing it with something... not sure what. Thoughts on materials and sealants?

• Any general warnings, advice, potential code violations?

I'm sure this will be something I proudly post to DIY, which is promptly shredded by comments of all the things I did wrong... So let's try to mitigate that!
