First DIY project, building storage into tiny room, advice sought

After a decade of renting I recently bought a flat; out of nowhere feelings for it appeared.

I've only done very basic DIY & decorating before, and want to use the small (119 x 126 cm) storage room we have as my practice project.

The Plan

  • get plumber to fix mess of pipes (we think this room used to have the boiler), I've just boxed out where these are in the model
  • rip out skirting board and existing boxing (or adjust if possible) and box new piping
  • remove wallpaper that is hanging off of the back wall, probably because it is bare render, not plasterboard
  • prepare back wall for decorating
  • build storage unit; I have some strange fascination with the bottom layer of shelves possibly being used as a desk or workbench which I'd like to keep clear of supports to allow rotation side-to-side when sitting and this made the supports more complicated
  • use LED strips to under-light the shelves

Concept and proposed support structure. I'm planning to use solid wood, sanded and painted before assembly.

Questions

  • Anything obviously wrong with my design?
  • Do we need to plaster the rear wall, or is it possible to apply paper to render?
  • Any ideas for improvements/extras?

Thanks kindly.
