Hard water and no space for a water softener... How about whole-house water filters?

I have hard water and it wreaks havoc by clogging the aerators on my faucets, clogging the nozzles on my rainfall showerhead, and clogging the jets in the dishwasher with the added bonus of clouding up glassware. With the way my utility room is setup I simply have no room for a water softener.

Is anyone familiar with addressing hard water without a water softener or know if whole-house filters would help?
