Trying to alter a 6 ton shop press to cut leather with a die. Have some questions about how to best handle this!

I am basically making this from this. Some folks on the leatherwork subreddits did it, but I don't think they had such large dies!

The die I'm using is for watch straps, about 12" x 1". The idea is the use the press to force a plate onto the die, the die cuts through the leather and hits a cutting board reinforced with steel underneath. I have the cutting board, I need the steel.

How thick should I make the plates? I think they should be about 12" x 10" to fit the machine properly. Would 1/2" steel be appropriate?

Also, are there any practical benefits to welding the plate to the press arm? Or can I leave the plate loose on the die with the same effect?

Last one! How much should I be paying for two 12"x10" plates...and how much is a reasonable quote for welding one of them to the press arm?

Thanks so much!
