I am 29 yo male, finishing my Master degree in Nanoengineering.
Two years ago I started this project, and even build first prototype, which of course didn't work and I just left it all collect dust in the corner. Anyway. How many damned times you made yourself a mug of tea or coffee, but the movie or the book were so interesting or you are just working, and completely forgot about it. Once you remember it is already too cold and taste weird. I made smart coaster (10x10cm), which measures temperature of an object via infrared (heat) radiation. Which means you don't have to bring the sensor in direct surface contact. The coaster will notify you once the temperature reaches your desired value!
