I'm trying to get a smooth concrete surface on a bar wall and counter. The guy at Home Depot told us to use quikrete, then top it with portland.
My husband poured the counter, and then realized that there was way too much agregate in the mix, so he mixed up a batch of portland and went over the top of the counter to make it look smooth. It looks much better, but it still isn't as smooth as we'd like.
We went back to HD just now, and bumped into a cement contractor who said to use a bonding agent, then apply patching concrete over the existing portland. Great, we can do that.
However, we forgot to ask him, but we also plan to do a 2ft section of the wall behind the bar. It just has cement board and wire mesh on it now. We're planning to go about 2in deep. Here's the plan for the wall, but we need advice!
- Apply bonding agent to cement board/mesh on wall
- Apply about 1.5 in of portland once the bonding agent is tacky
- Let the portland cure for a day (more?)
- Apply bonding agent on portland
- Finish with patching concrete
The patching stuff is like $18/bag, so we'd rather not go through a ton of it just to do the wall if we can do most of it in portland, then top it off with the patching.
This is kind of a big project for us, and we're concrete noobs. Because the employee at HD didn't seem to have a clue, we hope a few experienced Redditors can help us out!
Thanks everyone!
