How would you sand this edge/ should I be sanding it at all!?

Hi, me again, I am trying to revarnish and maybe fill in a couple of cracks in this bowl.

http://ift.tt/1T6PtLF I'm sanding it with 120 sand paper but it doesn't seem to be working? Should k start coarser and go down? Should I go finer than 120 as it's a smaller more tactile peice.

Any advice is much appreciated.

Ps, have I ruined it?
