Hi Reddit. I am more of a carpentry/plumbing/masonry guy and electric scares me a little bit (also more of a lurker than a poster). I have been trying to expand my knowledge and lean some things about electrical. My first project is a solar powered fan that is going to run 24 hours a day. The basic stuff: I am going to be running a bank of 12v computer fans off of a solar panel. The way that I have it laid out is that that the solar panel (12v, 10 watt) will charge a 12v battery. The battery will then run the fans. I have the battery being directly wired to the solar panel. the fans will be wired in parallel.
I am unsure about the sizing for the battery and the panel. I think that the solar panel have to produce more power than the fans consume in order to charge the battery. also the battery should be large enough to power the fans overnight, correct? I did some research online and there are several conflicting articles. I should/should not use a voltage conditioner. The fans and the panel should/should not both be wired to the battery leads. there should/should not be a controller in place. I am very new to electrical and any advice will be appreciated.
