After demoing the wood panels in the basement of my 1910 house, I found a decent size hole in the foundation. It's filled with tightly packed dirt. I've been digging it out, but am unsure of how deep it really is. It's possible it goes all the way through the foundation.

It's a couple of inches tall and a little more than a foot wide.
I've been researching various ways to fill this whole. At this point, I'm planning to use rapid set cement, but am curious if there is a better solution. Also, do you think it's safe to continue digging out the dirt? I don't want to compromise the structural integrity of the foundation.
