Listen, if you own your home, and want to DIY reno a few things (or a lot of things), and don't have much knowledge, please don't do it. Save yourself and any future tenants/residents the misery of fixing it. I live in a house now where a homeowner did just that. The guy obviously knew nothing about anything. The framing is terrible, NOTHING is square, nothing is flush. My doorway for my basement stairs is 6 1/4" from trim to corner of the wall at the top and 8 1/2" at the bottom. I can take pictures for those of you who know this stuff. I am a professional framer and stuff like this just gives me the worst kinds of headaches. But i definitely get hard seeing impeccable framing and renos done perfectly!
TL;DR: Don't take shortcuts. If you don't know what you're doing, hire a professional that does.
