Hi /r/gadgets! Recently I've fallen back in love with Emulators, but because of my weird school schedule, I am rarely home to play them. My solution? The Emubox. I've put all of my emulators, ROMs and ISOs on an external HDD connected to a USB hub along with a third party wireless PS3 controller. I've set up the proper file paths so that my Emus never have to place any folders or files outside of the external HDD, and now I can take that bundle anywhere and have all my things ready to play whenever it is convenient. I've found that it usually works out, because it simply uses the host computer's processing power and not much else. Now I want to expand on the idea. Below is a list of all the base components I intend to put into the project.
20-200GB SSD (dependent on model)
USB hub (port number and powered/unpowered dependent on model)
Sata-USB adapter (all models)
Bluetooth Dongle (all models)
USB Soundcard
Standard 3.5mm headphone splitter
A USB extension cable
Some kind of small briefcase type enclosure.
The higher the budget, the more things I plan to put in. I would really like to look into things such as Bluetooth/wired speakers, other fun USB devices, and maybe even some LED light strips and a small internal monitor. I really want some input from you guys! What kind of controller setup should I use? What features would you guys like to see in the Box if you were a potential consumer? (I don't think I'll ever get to a selling point of any kind, but if you guys like the idea I would definitely set up a kind of hobby subreddit for them.) Do you guys suggest certain components over others? What kind of enclosure should I use?
If anyone wants more info on everything I've planned out so far, leave a comment!
Lastly, if you Redditors think this is a crap idea, let me know. I'm definitely building one for myself, but I don't want to get too invested in making more than one if the general gamer wouldn't give it a thought.
Thanks, /r/gadgets!
