Looking to DIY replace stainless-steel panel on front of dishwasher with a thin, more aesthetic wood panel or vernier. Suggestions or thoughts?

Stainless steel appliances are all the rage these days, but I'm looking to tone down the steel in my kitchen. Has anyone removed and replaced the decorative front of a dishwasher before, DIY style? How'd it go? What did you replace it with, and how has the replacement stood up to the test of time?
