Hi Guys,
I'm building some cabinets and stuff for my wife and because of their odd depth I'm going to have to make a "custom" countertop. Its for a pretty utilitarian use so I'm not going to go crazy with it. Its going to be 30" deep and about 11.5' long. My plan is to take a bunch of 2x6x12s, plane them to be 1.25 x 5 and then cut the ends off after I've put them together.
The dilemma I have is the right tool for planing the boards. The DeWalt 735X seems a pretty solid planer but might be a bit hard to manage with 12 foot boards, especially on the narrow edges. On the other hand, the Rigid JP0610 has a much more substantial work surface but is limited in planing (can't plane anything thinner than 3/4" and nothing much wider than 6").
Anyone done anything similar that might have some insights or suggestions about the right tool? My total budget for tool is about $800, though I can go higher if it makes for a seriously better outcome.
Thanks!
