Can I spray paint fairy lights?

I have a string of fairy led fairy lights (appropriate for indoor and outdoor use) that I have hung up in my bedroom. I have beige colored walls and find the black wiring is too harsh against the light colored walls, making my low ceilings too apparent. If I properly used blue painter's tape to cover up the clear plastic covering where the LED emits the light, is it safe for me to paint the wiring with spray paint?

The wiring is a smooth shiny flexible plastic (I'll use a plastic primer before color paint)
