Soundproofing a closet?

I have an idea for a feature to build into a house I'm moving into. I have a dog that has a tendency to howl extremely loudly when left alone. Inevitably, he's going to be left alone at some point for varying lengths of time and is going to howl at some point, and I'd rather not have my first introduction with my neighbors be them complaining about the dog. There's only about 50-100 ft between my house and the neighboring houses, so I'm fully anticipating the dog's howl to reach them noticeably if not dealt with.

I had an idea to take a hallway linen closet that's positioned almost perfectly in the middle of the house and make it his little lair. It's very deep, deep enough to have his crate in with the crate door facing out. I'd cut the existing closet door to only extend about 2/3 of the opening, leaving the bottom 1/3 open even with the door closed. In that opening, I'd put his crate and bed. With his crate in there, I'd still have approximately 6" all the way around (including floor and "ceiling", which in this case is the underside of the bottom shelf of the linen cabinet) to install soundproofing materials. I could also place a soundproofing panel on the hallway wall immediately opposite the closet door to dampen sound.

Couple of questions... * Would this even be worth it, considering the open space in the hallway would allow some sound to escape? * What sort of soundproofing materials/methods should I try to implement if this does sound like a good idea?

I obviously can't soundproof the back of the door and close it, as that would leave him in a dark enclosed closet, which wouldn't be fair for him. Hopefully I've explained this well enough to get a visual, but I could sketch up something quick if people needed help with a visual.

TL;DR- Want to place a dog crate into an open closet, would soundproofing the 3 walls of the closet and the wall opposite the closet doorway work? If so, what materials should I use?
