[Help] Any soldering experts? I need help soldering two wires together. Not sure where to start.

First time on DIY so I hope this is all done correctly. tl;dr my headset's microphone died. I narrowed it down to a certain section of the wire and was able to cut it off and strip the wires. So these are what I have now.

I'm sorry about the potato but apparently my iphone cannot focus on super close things. But I hope that gets the point across. Most of the wire is cooper that was surrounding another insulting wire which turned out to be just more copper and I think some white wires.

Touching them together used to make my microphone pick up every once in a while. It doesn't so much anymore. Do I just try to solder the two white wires together? What do I do with the copper? I tried searching for the copper's purpose in a wire and didn't find anything other than it being a good conductor.

I hope I did this right and is enough info for someone to help out. I wanted to see if I could fix it before I just tossed it. Thanks for any help!
