HELP - my gas oven sounds like the Inception trailer [video inside]

Hi reddit,

I recently bought a home that contains a beautiful six-burner range - specifically the Capital GCR366. A couple of months ago the oven began making a low growling sound when heating up. Over time the sound got worse, and it began taking longer to reach the desired temperature. When the oven turns off, the growl dissipates into a "Chewbacca crying" sound. Occasionally, the burner will fail to ignite at all; in these cases, it seems like the gas never even starts to flow.

I have been unable to find a service manual or any other documentation besides the basic user manual. And given that this is an uncommonly expensive range, I haven't found any helpful online discussions from owners experiencing the same symptoms.

I have very little knowledge about appliance repair but it seems to me that the igniter is functioning properly. (It gets hot and lights the flame.) The sound seems to be coming from the valve that dispenses the gas into the burner. That's about all I know.

Here is a video that shows what's going on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LiWRMMgYuq0

  • 0:10 - igniter begins to glow
  • 1:16 - gas begins to flow, burner ignites
  • 1:20 - growling begins
  • 2:08, 2:19 - sputtering
  • 2:28 - close-up of gas valve
  • 2:47 - another sputter
  • 3:00 - gas squeaks off

Can anyone help me figure out what's broken, and whether I can fix it on my own?
