Hello gadgeteers!
Welcome to this week in review! This is something new we are exploring which we plan to post every week. In it we link and discus a few submissions made in this week that we thought were interesting or worthwhile.
IBM scientists have developed a brain inspired computer chip which mimics the neurons inside your brain.
Insert mandatory skynet joke here! A very interesting development in this area of research. Though according to /u/ChiefExecutiveOcelot's top comment not an exact replica of neural mechanisms
Please, don't think that this chip exactly replicates neural mechanisms. TrueNorth can’t learn and, like many neuromorphic chips, isn’t designed for neurons with active dendrites and many synapses.
Edit: For those interested - http://ift.tt/1Cjp4kX has talks from different parts of the field. I think that Jeff Hawkins and Winfried Wilcke are worth listening to, but that's just me.
Surfing the web like it is 1983 through a TRS-80 Model 100.
You have all kinds of hobbies, this is a rather interesting one. Sean Gallagher found a way to hook an old Radio Shack TRS-80 Model portable computer to the internet and browser around. In this article he details his struggles getting there, certainly worth a read!
Google announced a Wi-Fi router called the OnHub.
This one managed to attract a lot attention, so much so that we had to resort to removing duplicate submissions. The other option would have been renaming this sub to /r/oneHub!
Japan is looking out for their drunk passenger in public transport.
It is not the first time Japan is in the news for odd or interesting gadgets, this one is rather helpful though! Japan's rail network is rather extensive and a lot of people use it, including drunk people. Cameras placed on stations specifically look for signs of drunk people that are walking too close to the rails.
Canon's new camera can see in the dark!
The article itself isn't of a very high quality, as many people pointed out it had a fair amount of spelling errors. Nevertheless it managed to get voted up and contains the same information available in other articles. We are hoping to get some more news about this soon.
Lower-limb exoskeleton is controlled by looking at flashing lights.
Korea University and TU Berlin researchers are working on an interface that gives users the power to control an exoskeleton with their minds. They do this by having the user look at flashing lights that have a specific meaning. As someone in the comments points out, this seems to need some refinement before it is ready for daily use.
DIY 4g by a farmer to fix rural broadband issues.
Many rural areas have problems with getting access to the internet, for the English farmer in this article this was no exception. He turned his attention to 4G, he erected a receiver tower on the place with the best 4g reception and from there laid cables to his property!
Volkswagen tries its hands on designing strollers... and does a pretty good job!
As it turns out Volkswagen is also pretty good at making other four wheeled devices. Though we have to note that this probably more likely to be a marketing stunt than a real gadget (hoverboard anyone? )
This is just a selection of popular post we thought were interesting. For a full list of the top posts in this week you can click on this link!
