Removing ceramic tile with concrete and metal mesh behind

I recently purchased a home built in the 50'sand it desperately needs updating. I want to start taking out the tile that covers 3/4s of the walls in the kitchen but want to do it efficiently and with little damage to the rest of the kitchen as possible. Ideally, I'd like to remove just the tile and mesh behind it while keeping the drywall intact (I hate working with drywall), but I don't think that will be the most effective removal technique. any suggestions?
