Help: Kitchenaid dishwasher leaving powdery film

I have a KitchenAid dishwasher that is almost 3 years old leaving a powdery coating on all the dishes and any plastic on the inside of the dishwasher. When you touch the dishes they just feel gritty and like there is a coating on all of them. I can hand wash the dishes and they are fine. We have cleaned out the dishwasher 3 times now with those dishwasher cleaning packets. It works for one wash and then it comes back. Have no idea what is wrong with it or how to fix it. Anyone have any ideas?
