Ok, complete newb here. Recently, I moved into a rental that is very old (over 100 years old). There are a couple of the boob looking lights in the kitchen and dining. This morning I went to change the bulb in the kitchen and came upon something that didn't look right.
Whomever previously changed the bulbs had put in cfl bulbs that appear to be too large, because there are scorch marks on a thin piece of paper that looks like some kind of insulator? It looks like the previous person attempted to "fix the problem" by slapping some kitchen aluminum foil over the scorch marks.
To me, this rings "fire hazard", so I googled and haven't come up with what is exactly supposed to be in the fixture as an insulator. I just don't know what to call it, insulator? foil?
I watched a few how to videos and it's obvious that some kind of insulator is supposed to be there, but the ones in the video are thicker and look like it's a foil/paper combo.
