What can we use to paint over asbestos tiles that won't cause yellowing?
We have asbestos tiles in our second floor, and due to budgetary restraints we decided to paint over them. In one room we used one part epoxy floor paint. That wasn't durable enough so we covered it with Benwood acrylic polyurethane. Very durable, but it's now almost totally yellowed. I know it's from the asbestos tile because it's been patched with newer vinyl and those areas are fine.
For the second bedroom we used Conco alkyd primer, then latex paint, then the Benwood poly. It looked great for about 4 days, and now it's yellowing.
I was thinking of going over everything with some bad ass oil based primer, oil paint, then oil poly. I just wish I knew what was in the tile that was causing the yellowing. And that I remembered my organic chemistry well enough to do something with that information.
Has anyone ran into this? Any advice? Thanks reddit.
EDIT: After some extensive research (quick google) it looks like the tiles are bound with asphalt, a petroleum product.
