7 years ago, I moved into my house. My then-father-in-law helped out by redoing some of the flooring. In the bathroom, he put down hardboard (to level it with the hallway), with vinyl peel-and-stick tiles on top (that match the rest of the upstairs).
Fast forward 7 years, and with kids splashing water out of the tub, spilling water on the counter and generally getting the floor wet, the hardboard is swelling under the tiles, and pushing them up.
Now my kids are gone for a few weeks, it's time to take care of this. I pulled up the tiles and the hardboard, and underneath it doesn't look too bad. Just stained, I think.
Any suggestions on what to do with this? I'm just looking for something relatively cheap-and-easy that will last a few years, as we're planning some more major renovations in the next few years. I thought about linoleum, but it would be nice if it still matched the hallway. Could I get some plastic to replace the hardboard, caulk it around the edges and then put the tiles back on top?
Any other comments, questions, or suggestions are welcome!
