Fence hack job

Hi, kids. I have this wrought iron fence right behind my apartment. I hate looking out at the neighboring property's garbage cans, and I'm not crazy about the lack of privacy either.

My current plan is to screw some basic 1x3s to the posts on the existing fence and glue/nail a bunch of 1.5" redwood slats horizontally to the 1x3s. This will probably require staining before putting up the slats, since I don't have unobstructed access to the other side of the fence (I can get over there, but there's another layer of wire fencing on that side). I know this is not the proper way to install a fence, but does this seem like a reasonable hack?

For the record, I'm a renter, planning to be here a couple more years, and the property management company wouldn't pay for a new garden hose for the property after the old one started leaking, so I'm not going to bother them with a request for a privacy fence. Plus, based on the work done inside my apartment, I will almost certainly do a better job myself. I am a big proponent of the "easier to ask forgiveness than permission" rule. Anyway, normally I'd just do this, as it's not particularly complicated and I have the materials already, but I thought I'd ask for input just in case there's any reason to believe this would result in catastrophe or on the off chance that someone has an easier solution.
