GFCI tester says wiring is okay, but GFCI still trips

We had an electrical storm that knocked out a lot of our electronics in the house. This is the last thing that I'm trying to figure out. Our kitchen GFCI keeps tripping when anything is plugged in. I purchased and installed a new one as well as new outlets for all outlets on the circuit. Yesterday I bought a GFCI outlet tester to confirm all the wiring was correct. When I plug it in, the LEDs indicate all the wiring is okay. However, when I push the GFCI button on the tester, or plug anything into any of the outlets, the GFCI instantly trips. Any ideas?
