How would I go about building this $640 shelf on my own for much cheaper?

I saw this shelf on a modern design website for $640. I really like the shelf (not enough to spend $640) but moreover I like the concept itself. I wanted to learn how to make something like this myself as I have other conceptual ideas I want to try. Do you just wet and layer thin sheets on a pre-curved mold? I'm not sure where to even begin.
