Hi guys, I'm new here and also new to metalworking. So, I'm trying to make my own light stands using 1.5mm (approx 1/16th inch) thick, stainless steel 202 square tubing. I need to drill a total of about 150 holes in this stuff.
The first problem I faced was that unlike aluminum, this stuff is a LOT harder to drill through. So, I got some high grade HSS drill bits (Miranda Super Drill Bits [Indian company]) and still find that it's pretty hard to drill and I have to apply a LOT of pressure. I'm drilling using a Skil 6510 handheld impact drill and have been using coconut oil as a lubricant. So, I was wondering if:
I would find the drilling easier if I were using a drill press?
What kind of drill bits do you recommend?
What kind of cutting fluid/ cutting oil would you recommend?
Any more advantages of a drill press that I should know, other than accuracy? Does it reduce the effort required to drill?
How many holes should on average should my drill bit last in this stuff?
Should I get a bench grinder to sharpen my drill bits, or can an angle grinder somehow do the job? (I'm guessing the answers's no, and this would be REALLY dangerous, right?)
Thanks a lot for your patience guys. :)
