help with ideas for patio removal?
I have a patio that is about 20'x15' and it is ALL PAVED. It is this horrible rough aggregate concrete with rebar. Last year I got the bright idea to jackhammer it and you can see how well that worked I got about 2 square feet removed. When workers had to get under the patio to remove a well they did this. Any tips for removing this? There is a Home Depot near me that does the tool rentals but I don't really own anything yet that would help. Or do I just have to hire an excavator to do the work for me.

[HELP]A rubber mat for a car trunk floor
After an oil change, I put what I thought was a clean oil pan in the trunk of my car. Unfortunately, it wasn't as clean as I thought and the trunk of my car was rendered useless.
This past weekend I decided to start replacing the trunk floor/lining. I bought some hardboard and it currently serves as a trunk floor, but I also want to put something on top of it, preferably something rubber or something similar that I could just take out and hose down when it needs cleaning.
Amazon sells a lining for $30 but I imagine I can do better price-wise if I can just find a rubber mat that I can cut to fit.
My dad suggested a home improvement store but I wasn't able to find anything at the Home Depot near his house. Does anyone have any suggestions for where to look?

Corroded copper baseboard heating pipes going into slab - critique my repair plan?
Picture of the pipes in question.
I guess there's sulfur somewhere nearby that's corroding the pipes (there are two of them, sort of hard to see in the picture). Lucky to get through the winter without it leaking.
My plan is the following:
- Remove quarter round in this hallway to access the Pergo and remove that
- Drain the system
- Bust up the concrete near those pipes, exposing them, and go a little deeper if possible
- Remove the pipes (cut them above ground and remove the whole pieces)
- Run conduit where the pipes are so if this happens again or needs to be re-piped for any reason it isn't a huge deal (flexible nonmetallic conduit)
- Run PEX through that conduit and SharkBite fittings to the baseboard above ground
- Fill in the concrete, re-lay the floor and put on the trim
Anything I'm missing or should look out for? This goes into the concrete right at a doorway.

Trying to figure out how to cover my patio
Hey DIY,
My family and I are moving in to our new home in a few weeks, so I am getting my to-do list going so I can knock out as much as possible before all of our furniture is in.
One of the first things I want to do is cover our patio. We live in Houston where it is summer 8 months out of the year, and it rains once every three days. So, shade and cover are necessary. The previous owners put in this paver brick patio. I am going to leave the patio, and I think I need to tie in to the existing roof (also shown in the link).
Here are some of my questions:
-
How would I tie in to the roof? And what should I know before trying to do that
-
What might be the best way to anchor into the ground? I was thinking these 6" sonotube fittings with these 4" carport saddles
-
I was planning on using pine and sealing it with something... not sure what. Thoughts on materials and sealants?
-
Any general warnings, advice, potential code violations?
I'm sure this will be something I proudly post to DIY, which is promptly shredded by comments of all the things I did wrong... So let's try to mitigate that!

Surprise Vintage Chairs Hiding Under Plaid, Need Advice on Refurbishing
Hi there, DIY-ers!
I'll try to keep the back-story brief. A former housemate bought a beat-up dining room table and six very ugly, worn-out chairs, for $40 on Craigslist. He left them here when he moved, and this past weekend I found some neat fabric to use to reupholster the seats.
The chairs aren't in great shape -- there's some water damage on the legs and supports, and the cushions are a mess. I turned one of them over and to my surprise found a Findahls Mobelfabrik label, indicating that these chairs used to have leather seats. All I can imagine is that someone rescued these chairs from an unfortunate situation, attached an unfortunate plaid seat back and they re-entered the market.
So. Here we are. Now that I know these are actually really awesome, mid-century chairs, with beautiful teak seat backs (see picture in link above), I want to actually clean them, etc.
I'm looking for some suggestions on what the best process would be. There are tiny holes in the seat backs from where I ripped out the awful plaid seat back cushions (also in the imgur album liked above), but I don't know if trying to fill them would be worthwhile. The teak is beautiful.
Here's what I was thinking: 1) Take the seat cushions off 2) Give the chairs a nice clean with Murphy's, let them dry in the sun outside 3) Reupholster the seats 4) Add some wood glue to the joints that are coming apart, tie frames together while glue sets 5) Seal the teak somehow? Is this something i should even do? Should I just sand off the little nubs where I pulled the nails out? 6) Re-attach seats, enjoy very cool chairs
Would love any advice/suggestions!
Thank you!!

How would I paint something to make it look like wood grain?
I have a fiberglass camper shell on my truck and I'm interested in painting it to look like wood. I considered using wood paneling but the shell has a lot of ridges in it that would be hard to angle the paneling to look good. Right now it's just raw fiberglass and looks pretty awful so I wanna make it more clean and interesting looking with a light glazed wood grain finish. Any tips?

Advise on insulating garage as work area.
I am finally lucky enough to work from home but the only available space I have for my computer and other work equipment is in the garage. I currently rent the house I am living in and the landlord is perfectly fine with me installing insulation (obviously, because I am sure it adds value), but I don't want to cover the walls if I can avoid it. There are three outside facing walls as well as the ceiling that I would like to insulate. I live in New Mexico and our winters are mild to average but our summers can get very warm. I also have a couple vents that are shown in the imgur album, and I am wondering if I can/need to cover those with something. I believe that the standard r-13 insulation that is used in homes should work well, but what should I use for the ceiling? Do you see any problems inserting the insulation into the walls stapling them into place and leaving them like that? Another reason for insulating is to keep the computer equipment from being damaged in extreme weather/temperature.

Viability of adding a roof to an existing deck
I built a deck a few years ago and am considering adding a roof for some shade in the summer/rain protection. The deck is about 12x12, I set 3 concrete pillars 4 feet deep on each side and then used brackets to attach the rim joists. The floor joists are attached to the rim joists with hangers and then supported in the middle with deck blocks. It's not quite ground level but close to it.
My idea is to notch out 6x6's and then carriage bolt them into the rim joists so they are sitting directly over the footings to support the roof. I'm thinking a shed style aluminum roof.
Is this something I should even consider doing, or am I going to drop a roof on my head?
Thanks.

[Help] Building a shoe rack for wedding gift, looking for help.
Alright guys I'm building a shoe rack for my fiance as a part of a wedding gift and I need some help. I have finally settled on a reasonable design that seems possible and not too expensive http://ift.tt/1zdE4WY and http://ift.tt/1J99XAh. I'm going to make each row individually so I can always add/remove them as needed. I'm going to make each bay 6" x 12" x 36". So I should be able to make the side panels 6" x 12" and just make like 4-6 of them. Then my plan is to get sticks that are 2" x 1" for the interior pieces and support piece. Do you guys see any issues with my sizes of the pieces? Too small/too big? Also, I'm not sure how to connect the interior pieces to the side panels nicely. Originally I was going to screw them from the other side of the panel but then you will see a bunch of screws on the outside of the panels. Any advice on how to solve this problem?
FYI: I have some woodworking experience but not much. I'm going to need to buy all new tools, as I have none right now.

Rage at W 8.1 leads to steampunk Monitor
This week I completely lost it with windows 8.1. I have an Alienware laptop that runs windows 8.1. I can not convey my frustration with the whole panel, start menu ,Gui and user interface which makes my entire laptop feel like a bloody tablet and don't tell me that the desktop still works fine cause it's... I'm rambling sorry. To my point. So to get over my somewhat over the top rage I decided to build a 2nd portable monitor I built it into an old case so it can carry my laptop as well as all the cables needed. I.e power, HDMI and USB to USB. This last cable is needed because the second monitor that I built into this case is a touch screen. Not the best quality but it gives me the ability to scroll through the windows 8.1 with less rage than it would normally. It's been a fun project and i'm quite proud of it. It's a metal case but the interior where the screen is mounted is wooden so I'm going to be painting it and the outside off the case to give it a steampunk appearance.

Help/Advise request on a project for a show
A friend and I have to build a "submarine" for an acrobatic theatre show. It's basically a desk or even workbench like structure to raise a part of the stage, so the artists are better visible for the back rows. I post this here to get your opinion and advice on how to improve the structure. The specification which should be taken into account are the following: - the complete structure should be as steady as possible - it should be strong enough to hold about 300kg (about 660 lbs) (which will be moving) - It should be movable, on little dollys or at best light enough to carry - I has to be demountable, so it can be stored pretty easily, and put together and taken apart quite fast and easy. - The dimensions should be 1,2m * 1,5 m * 4m (47,2inch * 59 inches * 13 feet)
These are my current plans http://ift.tt/1GCTljW
I would really apreciate some help and advise on the entire structure or where you see problems and how you would solve it.
I allready have some ideas like, using four instead of three leg pieces and shortening the joining beams or using another beam in the middle to support the wooden panel, which is going to be the top surface.
If anybody has a suggestion of annother subreddit, where I should post this, because it would fit better than here, feel free to comment.

Help me fix my TV! Splotchy grey areas on screen mostly visible against black scenes.
Hi there! This is my first post so go easy with the trolling!
I have a Sony LCD TV. Some time ago, I noticed that certain areas of the screen, seemingly random, have started to fade or become splotchy (eww, what a word). It's very visible when there's any dark scenes playing on it, but not unbearable. I can post a picture later if it helps, but I'm wondering if there's some sort of DIY fix for this? It's almost as if the pixels are losing their intensity or something. I take care of my stuff, so I don't have any reason to think it happened from it taking a beating or anything.

Cement Step Repair (Color)

Help hard-wiring USB power to my car
Hello all, I have a simple car project coming up and just have a quick question.
I just bought this Bluetooth adapter
and would like to hardwire the USB power cord to my car. I do not want to cut the original cable, so my plan was to buy a simple USB car charger, plug it in, cut off the car charger adapter, and tap the power cables into my existing power socket.
Is this safe to do? Any regulators or anything inside of a car charger adapter I need to worry about?
My other option is to also buy a female power socket like the one below and tap that into my car. I feel like that just adds another piece and isn't necessary though.
Any advice is appreciated, thanks!

I made a new dining table
As a product of co-habitation, my old dining table apparently had to go and get something that fit the "Decor" of our apartment better (whatever that means). We settled on a design we found on Ana White and I went to work. Reading through many of the comments about trying to account for wood equilibration and preventing warping, I gave myself the goal of trying to use zero screws or nails in the process. For some twisted reason I thought that would make it more fun. I learned a lot in the process, and also justified the purchase of a table saw. Many things I'd do differently a second time around but I'm proud of how it turned out.

Car stereo/speaker advice
I apologize if this is the wrong subreddit, I wasn't quite sure where to post this.. But this looked like the best place! :D So I'm looking to put a nice sound system in my car. Not like uber fancy, but better than stock stuff. I've got a 2007 Mazda3. I know virtually nothing about speakers and stereos and stuff.. So I come seeking advice! What's kind of an average amount that I would spend when upgrading? What exactly do I want to look for/what's going to last me for a long time? Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)
