Smallest gauge wire for 60 watt bulb?

Hi, I'm making a lamp (I'll spare everyone the artsy fartsy details) that needs the thinnest gauge wire possible that can handle the amps. I'd like to use a 60 watt bulb but can get by with a 45 watt bulb. So by my calculations that is about 0.5 amps for the 60 watt and with two wires that's about 0.25 amps per wire(?). I've read several things that suggest you should use 18 gauge wire but when I look at tables like this they show 18 gauge can handle 2.3 amps max. I'm wondering if I could get away with 22 gauge, which is rated at 0.92 amps. Or even something like 26 guage if I went with the 45 watt bulb. I would use high quality wire if that makes any difference. Thoughts?
