Need help troubleshooting A/C problem; at a loss

Hello all,

I have spent all day working on my air conditioner, and am at a loss for what could be the problem. I think this eventually leads to a service call, but figured I'd give all you DIY experts a chance to weigh in before I open up my wallet.

Bit of background info - working with a Trane unit from 1987, we've sporadically had issues with it, but it has been running strong since we bought our house in 2001. This morning, I fired up the A/C for the first time this season:

  1. Fan spinning inside
  2. No love from my unit outside - no humming noise, no fan spin, zilch

I kill the power, pull the panel and everything looks in order. As mentioned, I have an older Trane model, and the contactor is "exposed". I turn the power back on, and manually press down to complete the circuit - A/C powers on fine, both the fan and compressor. I surmise that my contractor is busted, so I head to my local HVAC parts supply store, pick up a universal one, and rush back to finish the job - unfortunately Trane is the Apple of HVAC, so universal adapters often don't work or fit. I tabled this idea for a while.

The existing contactor felt totally fine though, so I began to wonder whether the thermostat wasn't calling for the A/C to turn on outside. I pull the panel, everything looks reasonable - I only have four wires (red, white, green, blue). Usually, yellow corresponds to A/C. After some Googling, read that on Honeywell thermostats, you drop Blue into the Y socket and you're good to go. No dice. Also, touching the various combinations of wires together directly did not solve the issue, which seems to rule out the thermostat.

Does this sound like a contactor issue? I don't think I'll be able to get the exact right part, so it looks like I'm opening up my wallet, but I can't help think why the contactor works so seamlessly when I press it down (doesn't stick, not gunked up or anything) and why it's dead.

Thanks in advance
