How do we repair these Concrete Stairs?
The previous owners coated our front porch with this epoxy finish, which didn't work well with the frost. As you can see, the base has cracked and the stairs are sinking. We had to remove the railings as they were starting to twist. We are thinking about completely removing the stairs and building a wooden deck/ stairs over top of the existing deck to avoid having to scrape off all of the epoxy. Would that be the best way to fix this? Would we just pour a new cement base and anchor the wooden stairs into it? I was quoted $4500 to replace the stairs and another $2000 to scrape the finish off of the porch by a contractor, but that's too much for my budget. Halp!

Really stupid track lighting question
Hi. Embarrassed first post in this sub. I just bought a house, and I'm struggling with our kitchen spotlights. We have three different groups of these Halogen triple fixtures, and one light is out in one of them. For the life of me, I can't figure out how to change the freaking bulb. What's even weirder is that other fixtures in the kitchen are really easy to change. Here are some images: http://ift.tt/2am7Fbn
Anyone have kitchen fixtures like this, or know what to do?
Thanks!

What are some good brands for repainting a solid pine desk?
My uncle gave me an old desk of his that's solid pine, but has seen better days so I want to give it a facelift. I know I need to sand/prime/paint/seal, but trying to find good brands to do this all with is a bit overwhelming.
Do I need a primer + sealer combo? Or separate ones of each? I have some old buckets of white paint from behr on me, but I'm getting conflicted reports that if I'll be using the desk daily it won't last long and I should go for another brand. Is this true? I was also going to just spray the completed desk with a polyurethane satin cover that my uncle has. Is there an appreciable difference between a spray and something pricey like General Finishes?
Also in terms of the sanding, neither of us actually own a power or orbit sander - just a bunch of 80 and 150 grit sheets. Would this be fine or should I go out and get some more/different grit sheets?
Thank you in advance
Sorry for the novice questions

Need help with blotchy stain
For a variety of reasons (stripping, sanding, application) the stain on my cabinets/doors is very uneven and splotchy. Re-sanding and staining is not an option. I've read about tinting the finish using the same stain to mask the unevenness. I used an oil based stain, and have an oil based polyurethane finish. What are my options, and how would I go about tinting the finish at this point?

Help please. Oven element touching the bottom of the oven.
Thanks for looking. Moved in to a new place and the oven isn't heating up, after removing the oven and checking the element the readings were a bit off. Anyway I removed the back and side panel to visually inspect the element, when part of it fell out my question was answered.
The problem is that it looks like the bottom of the oven has being pushed down causing the element to touch the bottom of the oven and the heat shield. Here are some photos. http://ift.tt/2alNqdI
So, If I put a new element in I'm sure it will be touching the oven and the heat shield. Won’t this cause the replacement to burn out as well?

Ceiling joists -or- my impending doom
So here is how my ceiling looks now. After consulting with an engineer (who said it was not load bearing) but without being able to see the ceiling joists I removed a pair of closets separating two bedrooms.
As you can see the joists were overlapped over the closet walls. There is nothing above, directly below is the middle of the garage and the house is collar tied. What plan of action would be best?

Experimental Results - removing wax stains from patio stones
TL/DR - Citronella Wax stains are almost impossible to get out of patio stones. Pour-N-Restore works best against them.
A few weeks ago, we suffered a major spill of OFF's Citronella Candle wax on our patio. Our earlier Reddit post, combined with input we received from the makers of the paving stones, resulted in several suggestions about how to remove the stain. Not wanting to make a bad problem worse, I decided to test each idea on some spare stones and document the results for all to see, hopefully making life better for the next guy. Check here... imgur.com/a/sjb0a
The above shows 7 different attempts at removing the stains. Some notes for each...
- A: Pour-N-Restore - I suspect the bottle I tried had been sitting on the shelf too long, as it came out like frosting, and was a real bother to apply. Even so, it appears to have done the best job of the bunch.
- B: Alliance Gator Clean, Oil & Grease Cleaner - The link to the left is for the QR code that was on the side of the bottle, but it does not take you to the actual product page. In fact, I can't find a page for this anywhere. The stuff I used as a pink, watery liquid, and not the stuff they appear to sell now. The pink stuff was close to useless.
- C: Dawn dishwashing liquid - There were a few posts suggesting this would work. We applied it strait out of the bottle and let it soak in, the used a scrub brush and power washer to rinse it off. Repeat. No effect.
- D: OxiClean - Made a paste, let it soak in, scrubbed and washed off. No effect.
- E: DuPont StoneTech Professional Oil Stain Remover - While the application was significantly easier than the Pour-N-Restore (above), it was a bitch to remove after the drying period. I scraped what I could off with a strong bristle brush, but I had to resort to the power washer to get the rest. Stuff stuck on like mortar. No real effect on the stain.
- F: Mineral Spirits - This was the recommendation of the people at SC Johnson, the manufacturers of the damned OFF! candle that caused all this grief. It softened the edges around the stain, but was basically useless.
- H: Classic Iron and Towel Approach - Many recommendations came in saying to put a towel over the area and heat it up with an iron. It was supposed to draw the wax out. No such luck. :-(
We have one stone left to do an experiment with (G). My thoughts right now are to re-try the Pour-N-Restore and make our decision after that.
I hope this helps.

Edward Snowden designs a device that will warn you if your iPhone's radios are snitching [Wired] [Thread]
Comment via akashb1: It's a phone case. It has connections on it that go into your phone's SIM card slots and contact the motherboard in certain places, to detect if wireless radios such as WiFi and cellular are being used. Then, if airplane mode is on, and your radios are still transmitting, it will alert you. There are plans to even build in a kill switch to cut power to the radios. The idea is that Airplane mode is insecure and can be disabled without your knowledge, and cause your phone to appear to not be transmitting when in fact it can be relaying microphone and location data. This add-on alerts you to the security breach.

I got my first Smartphone ever about a week ago (Galaxy On5), so I know nothing about this stuff. The first game I downloaded was FFT, and it's been running great! But I checked my storage space today and it says I have 2gb still free, but over 9gb of data (on an 8gb phone). If I pull up the FFT app, it says the app is 680mb but the data is 7.4gb! What is this?! I was going to click Clear Data, but it says I'll lose everything if I do that (and I'm assuming that means Saves). Someone please help... [Add suggestions here]

What's that? Another rule change? This time it's CROWDFUNDING.
Hello again, gadget lovers!
The mod team have been discussing the rules again and we've got some news for you.
On a trial basis, we are going to allow posts about gadgets currently undergoing crowdfunding campaigns.
This is subject to a few conditions which I'll lay out below, but first let me explain why we've made this decision. This is a pretty big change for /r/gadgets, all active crowdfunding has been banned from the subreddit for some time to prevent us from being swamped by scams and unfulfilled campaigns. With the success of the white list, we've already been able to relax several of the rules regarding rumours and pre-orders, so the next natural step was to assess whether the crowd funding rule was still needed.
We're not sure what the long term impact of this change will be, which is why this is a trial. Once we've been able to see how the subreddit is affected, we'll make a decision on whether to make it permanent. As the subscribers, your opinions are incredibly valuable. We're very keen to hear what your thoughts are on this, please send us modmails with your feedback so that we can take community feeling into account.
The Conditions
Posts about gadgets subject to active crowd funding campaigns are subject to the following conditions:
- The article must be from a white listed source
- The article must be about the gadget, not the company, its business practices, or delivery dates etc.
- The submitter must not be affiliated with the campaign, company or website
The change is effective immediately and there will be mods available to answer any questions you have.
We will also be discontinuing the Crowd Funded Fridays Superthread for the duration of this trial.
That's it, folks.
I do enjoy our little chats.

Softwood sturdyness
Hi, I made this week a chair using some 2x4 (pine). It is really sturdy but bulky at the same time. I would like, now that I 'gained' some experience, to build a mid-century style chair. Like this one But when I look at it, it seems to have like 1x1inch legs. How could I achieve this? By not using softwood? Or is pine this thin sturdy enough and I'm just stupid to think it will break?

Advice needed: Flooring issue
Greetings all (except you Steve. You can go to hell)
I am renovating a house built in 1924. At some point a "breakfast nook" was added next to the kitchen. It is roughly 8x8. I plan to turn this into a bathroom in phase 2 of the renovation (9-12 months from now).
After tearing up the peel-and-stick tiles in the kitchen and "nook" (The inventor of that stuff can rot in hell with Steve) I measured the height difference in the two rooms and the nook's floor is about 1.25 inches higher. There is a sharp incline just inside that room.
I'm laying floating laminate flooring and I don't thing it will handle the height transition well at all. Should I wall in the nook now, with the wall wedged to accept the incline, and then float the floor on either side of the wall? Or does anybody have any better ideas? I would hate to lose the use of that space while saving for the bathroom. I would just cut in a small doorway for access in and out that will be pretty fugly.
Thanks!
