Can I add additional batteries to handheld vacuum cleaner?

I am not very keen on electronics and I need your help here. I have a Rowenta handheld vacuum cleaner that recently started to lose its charge very quickly. I couldn't even clean a big table. I wanted to replace its internal cells with new ones but once i opened its chassis I found out that there is plenty of room for additional cells. My model is designated as the weakest of all in its series - it runs on 3 1500mAh Ni-CD cells rated at 1.2 Volts. They are charged with a charger with output of 300mA at 6V

I thought - maybe I can buy lets say 6 replacement batteries and add them to the series? It would then be 6 batteries of 1500mAh at total 7,2 Volts. Just to give it more suction power.

But then there is this little circuit I don't really know what it does.

I guess it checks if batteries are at full charge. I wonder what will happen in this circuit when I add those extra batteries? Will it charge to original capacity of 3x1500 mAh or will it charge to 6x1500mAh but much slower? Or will my house burn down to ground? Can I add those batteries?

Sorry for any mistakes - I am not a native speaker.
