Sanding help needed for first DIY

Hello DIY!

I wanted a DIY project that would help me develop some skills. Recently I purchased a side table off of craigslist - http://ift.tt/1zTl8WJ

Did a little bit of research online and found a few grits of sandpaper that I would use for this project. But I am running into some trouble. As you can see I have gotten the edges from the top sanded and removed the paint, however I have no idea what I need to do to remove the paint from the following areas: the very top, sides, and the fine lined areas.

Any help is greatly appreciated. I don't have any power tools yet, right now I am just relying on elbow grease to get the job done.
