What is a good all around drill? Or at least specs for one?

I graduated from college a little over a year ago so I do not have a large set of tools for projects or to fix things around my apartment. I have been slowly building that up.

I have run into a couple times that I have needed a drill and I would like to purchase one. There's seems to be a large selection. I was wondering if there are some that seem to be more all encompassing than others. I am just worried about buying something and it being too weak for the job.

If you don't have a make/model in mind specs would help (torque and such).

Examples of things I have needed it for:

  1. Drilling a whole in a wall for a screw anchor (I ended up using a normal screw driver to sit there for an hour trying to get a screw to bite into a stud)

  2. Drill small holes in the back of a shotglass case I made out of oak some year ago ... wanted to add a wall mount

  3. Basically the same thing as above, needed to drill small holes in the back of a whiteboard. Holes need to be drilled into thin aluminum trim

  4. Broken box frame. Need to go buy a long piece of wood in order to trace the broken piece on the bottom. I will need a drill strong enough to drill in long screws into the frame.
