Drive mechanism for objects on a common axis that rotate at different speeds

I am wondering how to design (inexpensively; no custom machined brass!) a machine that will rotate three objects on a common axis, at different speeds. It's not exactly a solar system model, but similar to one - a lamp with rotating pieces is what I've got in mind.

A drive mechanism similar to used on this solar system model would be basically what I'm thinking about.

It looks like this machine uses nested different diameter bits of tubing to transmit the rotation to the different components. The shaft in my case may be quite long (think a floor standing lamp) so there would probably have to be some proper bearings to keep it all rigid.

Ideas on types of bearings, shafts, gears, and where to buy them, would be great.
