SIMPLE (WIFI?) HOME INTERCOM/ 2-WAY RADIO RECOMMENDATIONS
Happy New Year Everyone- I'm looking for a simple two-way radio home intercom to set up for my parents. My Dad spends lots of time in the detached work shop working with tools and my Mom would like a way to communicate with him without going outdoors. They had classic radio intercom in the past, but they didn't work very well. And I just bought the top (cheap) Amazon system but it too was insufficient and maybe out of range? So maybe a wifi based system? Sound can be an issue when getting his attention when he's on a machine, so even a visual signal could be great too. Let me know if anybody has any experience or ideas for a simple system.

Need more storage with this train table. Can I just nail trim pieces so storage bins can slide in and sit on top?
I picked up this nifty train table at goodwill for $10. I need more storage for the train tracks, I had them in bins under the table but I don't like the look it never looks neat under there. The table comes apart in 3 sections on top. The middle section holds two drawers, one on each side of the table. I was wondering if I can nail trim on the insides of the table(without drawers) and slide the storage bins across the tops? I hope that made sense. In these pictures the last two show how I would like the bins to sit under the top of the table. Thanks for your help and have a SUPER day!!

How do I close a 5" diameter hole in a cinder block wall?
The DIY projects never end seem to end when you buy an old house! :) So the former owner had an exhaust fan in the the side of a cinder block wall. I removed it, which leaves me with a 5" hole. How can I patch this? I've worked with "Quickrete" before but I'm concerned that: A) the concrete is going to fall into the hollow spaces inside the cinderblock and the 5" hole is high up enough on the wall that it would take forever to fill it up... and B) How do I prevent the wet concrete from falling out of the other side? What I mean is, how do I make it straight so that the concrete patch is flush with both sides of the wall? Should I attach plywood as a form or something? I really don't want to make more holes attaching something temporary... Any and all advice is greatly appreciated!

[Help] Came home from vacation and our pipes are frozen, no leaks that I can find. How do we thaw them?
Just like the title says. Water comes out at a trickle; hot water works fine I assume because the tank fills while we don't run it. We have a boiler & radiators, and I'm worried this will damage them if they can't refill properly. Any advice? I do not know where the frozen pipe is. We live in a multi-family home, and we thought one of the families were home and would run the water...but they were not and did not.

This rig lets me monitor my blood sugar continuously on my wristwatch. I think it would help my life tremendously, but is very cumbersome as it is now. Pulling my phone out is an awkward process of untangling wires and smushing them back in until it feels almost comfortable. It must be wired, there is no wireless option. My first thought was I need to reinforce the USB with a holster and PCL molding plastic, or I'd cause $600 in damage if I sat down wrong, but the results (linked above) feel cumbersome. I'm willing to spend money and hours, but I'm out of ideas.

A list of features I'd like to see more often in future smartphone designs. Why are the manufacturers so obsessed with fancy gimmicks rather than making their devices more practical?
New phones are marketed with so many features that are ultimately barely used, while other features that are much easier to implement and were proven to be practical, are for some reason left out.
Here are a couple of features I find worth implementing: - A removable battery. - An option for wireless charging. - NFC capability. - IR Blaster and receiver - so that the phone could be paired with any remote control and to "learn" IR codes for future use. - Camera with Flash, Front facing camera. - USB Host, possible slimport - MicroSD slot - Notification LED - Unlocked bootloader and developer-friendly platform (So that custom ROMS would be supported, along with many other ways to customize the OS)
Additionally, a list of features that for me seem overrated: - Screen size. Most of the modern devices feature screen sizes that I can live with. I would want it to have a sufficient resolution and wide viewing angle though. - Water proof. I'd rather have an option for removable battery, and that the phone would be easier to repair at home. - Camera. I don't need it to be the best on the market. Most of the devices feature one that meets my needs. - Size, weight and design. It doesn't have to be extremely light and thin, nor has it got to have some fancy brushed metal look, for people who care about their phone are going to stuff it inside a bulky case anyway. So why not building the phone into a hard removable plastic case in the first place rather than selling a device that wouldn't hold-up without separately purchased accessories? - etc... It doesn't have to include any facial recognition, fingerprint sensor, air gestures, humidity sensor, heartbeat sensor etc... this might be only my opinion, but frankly I don't know anyone who actually use these features after the first couple of weeks with the phone.
All of these features aren't that revolutionary neither hard to implement. Why aren't there more devices that have them?

Is there a gadget out there (that is not a smartphone) that can do several vibrating alarms with messages throughout the day?
I'm on the hunt for a device that can do the following to help my kid stay on track throughout the school day. Something that can be set each morning with reminder alarms before each class in the school day reminding him what is needed for that class. It needs to:
- Not be a phone. Phones are required to stay in lockers during the day and may not be taken to class.
- Vibrate. The school does not allow for loud alarms during the school day.
- Shows a short reminder message like "Turn in homework" or "Ask teacher about make up assignment" and "Practice Guitar"
- Allows for 8-10 different alarms daily.
I thought a pebble or a smartwatch would be the perfect thing, but they seem to need the phone nearby to use notifications. Since his phone is in his locker, it won't work.
The closest thing I can find is the "Watchminder" and the "Vibralite" watches, but the reviews on each is that they are harder to set and use.
My next route is DIY, but before I re-invent the wheel I thought I would see if anyone knew of a device that might be the thing.

Reddit DIY'ers I just bought a circular saw to start woodworking with, I feel like I've made a big mistake...
I just bought a Black and Decker Circular Saw after reading a handful of posts and websites for beginners which told me it was the perfect tool for amateurs. What's a good budget(!) slow motion camera?
After playing with my brother's new iPhone 6 Plus and it's 240 fps mode, I am in love. I Googled around for dedicated cameras with this type of functionality, but couldn't find anything particularly affordable.

Today I learned the difference between male and female wire connectors
A male connector is normally referred to a plug, where it has a pin for a center connector. A female connector is normally referred to as a jack and has a center connector to accept a male pin.

Leaving external hard drives plugged in all the time?
I am hoping this is the right subreddit to post this to.
I have a Seagate 2TB hard drive. I access the files on it regularly. But I have this notion in my mind that leaving it connected to the PC will damage it sooner. So I leave it unplugged and plug it in whenever I need it. I am wondering if this practice actually makes a difference or am I making things inconvenient for myself for no good reason?
Additional info: I use my pc everyday - whereas I plug in my HDD 2-3 times a week. I turn my PC off at night and when not in use, and my HDD does go to sleep with the PC if I was to leave it connected in at all times.
Hopefully someone can help me out!

Looking for a cost-effective solution to house a few 3.5" SATA drives, doesn't have to be a NAS.
I have a few 3.5" drives laying around ranging from 500GB to 2.5TB, and thought they'd be put to better use as external storage for my Macbook Air and Retina iMac which are both using low capacity flash drives.
I currently have an Icy Box NAS4220-B which houses 2 of the drives, but I can't get it to work at all.
I'm after something cheap, so it doesn't need to have network capability, but USB, possibly Thunderbolt (unlikely at desired pricepoint) and the ability to hold at least 2-3 drives with low power-consumption.
What are my best options?

Bluetooth Headset for Workaholic Female with Small Ears
The title kinda says it all - I'm on conference calls for probably 3 - 4 hours of any given day and would love a bluetooth headset to make my life a little easier, however I've not had any luck with the ones I've tried (Plantronics and Jawbone), either because they're too big to be comfortable (I've got like.. little kid ears or something) and I can't get them to fit properly, and maybe because of the fit issue, but people always complain that they can't hear me.
Any recommendations for a headset that has a super-extra-small fit option, decent battery life and good sound/mic quality? At this point, budget is not a concern for me but let's keep it reasonable (no thousand dollar ear pieces please :) )

Looking for a USB 3.0 hub that will charge an iPad (2.1A minimum) while providing a data connection to a computer
So I thought this was would be an easy thing to find... but apparently not. I can't seem to find a hub that can actually charge an iPad while providing a data connection. It seems the only hubs I can find have one or two ports that charge 2.1A (enough for an iPad) but they're for charging only, no USB data connection.
USB 3.0 would be preferred over USB 2.0, as I'd like to use the hub with other USB 3.0 devices... but if it comes down to it I'd take a USB 2.0 hub over nothing.
Unfortunately my PC doesn't provide 2.1A on the USB ports, so plugging in directly isn't an option.
Thanks for any suggestions you guys can give me. I feel stupid even asking because I thought this would be an easy product to find... but it's really not. I've looked on Newegg, Amazon, Monoprice... no dice.

The Weego jump starter kit?
I'm not sure if this is the correct spot to post this, but I think it is. Please direct me elsewhere if needed.
I've searched reddit and the net, but really can't find a decent review on the Weego Jump Starter kit
They have different kits with different size batteries but the 'small' 6000 mAh battery should do.
My primary use will be in times of emergency(car won't start). It's advertised as being a go-to charge it up for your tablet/laptops/phones but I won't be using it for that.
My phone has a 3900 mAh battery and last in the 1.2-2 day range so I'd imagine the battery life will be decent with this thing.
I hate to pull the trigger when I can't find anything about people's experiences. Anyone out there own one or know of someone that owns one?

I ordered a Sony Smartwatch 2 from Amazon. Look what I received....
I received some money from my parents to buy myself a present for Christmas. I've always fancied a Smartwatch so decided to treat myself to a Sony Smartwatch 2 from Amazon as that was all I could afford. That was on 17th December and I chose One Day delivery as I have an Amazon Prime Trial running. When the order confirmation e-mail arrived it stated expected delivery for 23rd December so nowhere near next day delivery. There then followed live chats and emails with Amazon representatives and they explained that they had no stock in their UK fulfilment centre so it had to come from abroad (hence the change in expected delivery date) and they assured me it would arrive before Christmas and specifically, on the 23rd. The 23rd came and the order tracking showed that the package was in France?! I rang Amazon and spoke to a lady who spoke very poor English. I explained the situation and she just said that all she could do was order another but not to worry as it will turn up the next day. I explained that as there was no stock in UK that there was no chance in hell that would happen but she went ahead and ordered a replacement anyway. I didn't get a single apology from her and it was a classic example of it taking 30 minutes to understand what each other was saying when it should only have taken 3 minutes. I fired off another complaint e-mail and received a call from an Escalation Team member. He was much better. He apologised and agreed that I would not be getting the Smartwatch before Christmas. He offered me a £10 gift voucher as a goodwill gesture. He says that I may well end up with 2 watches and to return one of them. Well blow me down! Christmas Eve arrives and the orginal order which was missing in France had magically teleported to me! All's well in the world again.
Fast forward to today and the 'replacement' Smartwatch order also arrives:
How on earth did someone not notice that? How did it get into the new stock?
TL;DR Amazon sent someone's crusty, old and very worn Smartwatch to me.

[Request] Is it possible to restore this belt?
I bought a belt blank, 100% leather, natural color, no dyes or stain. Wore it. Now it looks like this. The leather is high quality and thick. Is it salvageable? If so, how should I go about repairing it to a respectable state? I thought I was going to be able to use this belt for a lot longer than it's been.
Any advice is appreciated.

Need help with the hardware side of setting up a LightBerry
So I know the standard setup for a LightBerry involves this setup:
HDMI Splitter --> HDMI Cord --> HDMI to RCA Video Converter
HDMI to RCA Video Converter --> USB/RCA Capture Grabber Adapter
USB/RCA Capture Grabber Adapter --> RasPi
I was wondering if there was a way to save fifty dollars and do something differently than this?
Is there a cheaper, less cords/wires way of doing this?
Can I simply do this: A. HDMI Splitter --> HDMI Cord --> RasPi HDMI Port

Why do 3D models on the PS1 tend to shake and jitter like they do?
You know what I'm talking about. There was a game, I think Time Crisis, that had an island in its opening scene. We used to call it Earthquake Island because of how dramatically is pulsated on the screen. Why is this?
I've played PS1 games on an emulator, and even if you turn up the resolution so that the models look completely clear, they'll still shake around, changing shape with every movement. It's not as odd looking at the default resolution.
What's the technological reasons behind this? The N64 didn't have this problem.

Need Help Buying a Higher Quality A/V Receiver
Sorry for the wall of text. My wife and I needed a new receiver since our old one blew the AMP. For Christmas my wife bought a NAD T-758 for $1000 since she heard how amazing the audio was. It has enough HDMI ports for our devices, but does not have a 4k passthrough. It also has MDC which potentially allows you to change out video/audio modules as technology changes (assuming a module has been released). Looking these up they currently do not offer a 4K module and the modules themselves appear to be extremely expensive. So this morning I was looking at other receivers and found something that looks much more future proof and is even $200 cheaper. The Onkyo TX NR838. It appears to put out similar quality sound with slightly higher power output. It also has a clean 4k passthrough and a few other functional features the NAD does not have. I am looking to hear from anyone who might have a better suggestion for a receiver or can compare the two of these for me so I know I am making the right choice. $800 - $1000 range is where we are at here and we hope to have something that is durable, has excellent audio, and solid video. 4k Would be a huge plus. The ethernet, Wifi, and other misc internet services are not important to us. If there is a better sub for this question then let me know. Thanks for reading!

Woodburner hearth build

It seems like tile is a pain, dealing with grout is a pain, and everyone that redoes their bathroom has water damage behind the tile, so why do we keep using it? There has to be something between tile and crappy plastic tub surrounds and vinyl for flooring.
This was someone's comment from another post, just wondering what you thought of it.
"Tile is the biggest scam of the home improvement illuminati. "Oh it's so easy, you can do it yourself, you just sponge the grout in between the tiles, these little plastic spacers take all the work out of it". Anyone who has ever tiled knows this is all bullshit created to draw you into the Lowes vortex.
You know why tiling looks so easy on TV? It's because half the time they're doing it on a mock-up wall. They aren't dealing with corners, wall fixtures, uneven surfaces, unsquare walls, or goofy dimensions that require you to cut most of your tiles into goofy shapes. Plus the TV crews have an army of guildsmen hiding behind the scenes to make sure that the materials are just perfect. I've never seen thinset that was capable of holding a tile to a wall. I've never seen grout that wasn't more interested in making a mess out of my sponge. What I have seen is plastic spacers that refuse to release from between the tiles once the glue is dry, tiles that come out of the box with inconsistent dimensions, shower enclosures for which no combination of clever cuts can yield a nicely laid out border pattern, and floor tiles that incessantly rock yet can't be pried loose to attempt a re-glue.
TLDR fuck tile"

anchoring into fiberboard plaster?
my house has this strange (to me) backing for the plaster.
the wall is made of at most 1/2 inch of plaster and other cement thing, and then the backing is this thick (1 inch or so) fiber board.
it's made of light brown fine fibers. it breaks easily by hand. looks like this a bit http://inspectapedia.com/insulation/Bowling_Alley_Lane_Insulation_0511_DJFs.jpg
how do I anchor heavy things in this type of material?
I want to put some shelves and a dresser in a kid room and I don't want things to tilt/fall on the kid because the anchor came out of the fiber board
