Smart panel for modem/phone.
I Use Time Warner as my phone and Internet provider and their modem also has to have the phone cord plugged into it. This modem is in my closet and would like to move it to my kitchen. I was wondering how to run the phone since I plug it into a jack in the smart panel.
I thought about installing a jack in the closet and then run a jack to the kitchen. I though you could plug a cord into the smart panel to the jack in the closet then plug the modem into the jack in the kitchen. Apperently this doesn't work when doing it this way or my wiring from femal to female is wrong. So how should it be done? I was just trying to make it look clean.
Any input would greatly be appreciated

Need help!!
How should I go about removing fiberglass and styrofoam (top and bottom caps) faux pillars? Obviously I will retain the actual structural beam inside. I'm thinking a high speed cutoff wheel or something similar. I'd like to keep the airborn fibers and mess to a minimum as there is a swimming pool close to the pillars.

Water still flowing after closing shut off valve?
Hey everyone, I'm changing out my old sweat valves to compression in an upstairs bathroom (for the sink) due to a slow leak. I've never shut the water off to the whole house before and am a little confused. Here is a picture of my shut off valves. There are three valves, one to the left of the water meter, one to the right of the meter, and one higher up the wall on the right side. I assumed the one to turn was the one in the middle, directly to the right of the meter, so I turned that clockwise and turned on the faucet of my utility sink (on the same floor) as well as the sink up two floors above which is on the same level as the sweat valves i'm replacing. Although the water pressure seemed to go down a little after a while, it never stopped. Did I not let the faucets run long enough (ran them for about 20 min), or is the valve I turned in fact not the correct one? Thanks for any advice!

Garden light connected to main living room light stopped working
I have recently moved into a new property and all light fittings came with no shaders/were pretty basic. I have then proceeded to (safely) remove the light fitting of the living room, replaced it with a proper pendant lamp, and reattached it. It works well.
However, since doing this a floodlight in the garden (sensor activated, halogen) stopped working. The floodlight comes with a switch to turn it off completely, I checked it is in ON position and the bulb is not damaged (tested it on a different lamp).
The builders confirmed the circuit/cabling of the garden floodlight is connected to the one in the living room but refused to articulate any further.
A look at the living room light fitting shows the current situation: http://ift.tt/1VZwU30
To illustrate better, here are the cables getting IN the eight holes (pardon the terminology):
BLUE (to lightbulb) BLUE empty empty BROWN BROWN BLUE BROWN (to lightbulb)
There are also two spare cables, one blue, one brown, hanging forlornly by the side:
I half suspect these may be those giving electricity to the outdoor light, but as I have done enough damage with my first intervention, I turn to you for any indication of what may be wrong with this/where I should place those two leftover cables.
Thank you for any help! I am in the UK.

Do I need brackets for my shelves?
Hi DIYers,
I am building shelves in a nook in my home office. The nook is 60 inches by 20 inches. I am going to build 2 shelves 60 by 18 and the top shelf will be 60 by 10 for a total of three shelves. I have already purchased and cut 1/2 inch plywood to size. My original plan was to just curt 2 inch strips of the plywood, and affix the strips of plywood to the walls of the nook and then lay the shelves on top, but now i'm second guessing myself. I plan on storing some books on the shelves so weight is a factor. I think I might need brackets. What is Reddit's opinion?

My shed door is warped... any remedy? (PICS)
Hi /r/diy,
Almost wrapping up my major project - small outdoor shed.
I've constructed two hinged doors from composite siding and 1x4 trim. The left door closes first, and the right door comes on top of the left one in the middle. But the right door doesn't seem to close all the way on the bottom - seems like the right door isn't completely flat: PICS HERE
If I push the bottom of the right door, it will lay flat, but when I take my foot off, it sticks out again.
Anyone have ideas for how to remedy?

HELP Can i take this coffee table and get it to the color of my dinner trays?
Someone threw this out because it had loose legs. All it needs is a little TLC. All i had to do was tighten the bolts on the inside and its back to new in terms of sturdiness. However it doesnt match our living room. We have lighter pine wood like furniture with the exception of our dark mahogony colored tv stand. We would like it lighter. I have never done a project like this. Could i sand it down and stain it lighter somehow? Or can stains only make things darker? This area is new to me. Any suggestions? Please include supplies needed with instructions for your suggestions. Thanks!

If I put two hooks in studs and two eye hooks in the top of the door and hang it with strong chain will it hold okay or will the leverage be too much for the hooks.

My little wardrobe project
With my second son on the way and money's tight, I managed to get myself a free wardrobe recently. As seen in pictures it was a horrible purple colour. I got it straight home and got to work painting the inside before building a shelf out of an old wardrobe door. I then sanded the whole outside of the wardrobe before a few coats of paint. I just finished it off by adding the handles from the donor doors I used for the shelf. Probably not to the standards of you guys on here but I'm pretty happy with the result considering it didn't cost anything and it kept me busy for a few days. Good/ bad comments welcome.

....I have several 18v dewalt tools and the batteries have always died quicker than I thought they should. I recently purchased 2 20v Lithium-ion batteries, a charger, and an adapter so I can use the 20v batteries with my 18v tools.
A couple of other benefits to this is I can still use my 18v batteries until they completely die and I can upgrade to 20v tools if my current tools ever give out.
Just thought those that have these tools may be interested.

Help removing wood floor from wood subfloor (glued and nailed)
Here is my problem. About 200sf of wood floor glued and occasionally nailed to a wood subfloor. I want to remove the wood floor to install tile. I spent about 45 min getting started with a hammer and pry bar and not only didn't make it very far but I also managed to damage the subfloor in some places.
Google recommended a walk-behind floor scrapper. I called all the rental places around and no one has one (Grand Rapids).
The next "best" suggestion I read was cutting through the wood (not into the subfloor) with a circular saw perpendicular to the planks every 6" or so, then using a heat gun to weaken the glue while using a prybar and hammer.
I will spend ~20+ hours on my knees with a heat gun and prybar if I have to, but anyone have any more efficient/smarter ideas for removing this? Paying someone is not in the budget.
2 images of where I ended last night. The first shows where I damaged the subfloor with the prybar and where strips of subfloor are being pulled up with the glue. The second shows places where the bottom layer of wood flooring are really stuck to the subfloor around the register.

Need to pull my heart out & take a bite!
I'm in a burlesque troupe & for my next performance I'm planning on cutting out my heart & taking a bite. I've done some research & have an idea that might work. Coming to Reddit to see if anyone has better ideas.
MY IDEA: Create a jello heart, fill it with fake blood. Put the fake heart in a ziploc filled with fake blood. Tape the bag under my breasts. When I cut through my top just cut through the ziploc bag too. Then pull the heart out.
THINGS TO REMEMBER: -It's burlesque so the less clothes the better. -have to hide the heart & blood under as little clothing possible -would like to take a bite of the heart & eat it -itll need to be attached to me for about 3.5 minutes of performing before I cut it out.
Thanks in advance for your help!!

How would you make a frying basket?
Hey folks, I'm not sure if this is the place to ask this but I thought I'd give it a try.
I'm trying to start a bakery going from my home. The place where I live allows for "cottage law" which keeps the expenses seriously lower than normal until you reach a certain revenue per year. I thought I'd try making donuts. Everyone likes a good donut, right?
I'm going to have to make as many of the donuts as possible but a key to the cottage law is that you must use ordinary household cooking equipment to make all food. This means no giant donut factories like you see on youtube, so I'm forced to use only small fryers to finalize the recipes.
The problem is, there's way too much movement when you toss the dough into the fryer. Transferring the dough from one surface to the next ensures that there's always going to be some kind of stretching involved, and it's been very noticeable. I asked the fellows in /r/baking and they said the pros use proofing SCREENS to allow the dough to rise on. That way they can lower the entire screen into the giant fryers. Problem is, I'm forced to use only the tiny fryers and the huge screens won't fit.
TLDR: How would you make a series of small frying screens to carry maybe 4 donuts on while they proof and still be able to retrieve the screens when the donuts are done frying?
I'm a total newb with this stuff. Is it even practical?

Is this mission impossible? Or just a mission? How would I go about making this table?
I fell in love with this table and am thinking about trying to make it myself - though with a full glass panel underneath and a full glass top, with the wood in between glass (for stability), all on a wood frame with sturdy wood or metal legs.
Is this doable??
I searched for wood planks on eBay, and found quite a few that might do the trick if cut in half.
And no, I've never made a table before. Any opinions or tips would be greatly appreciated!!

Putting Together a Fire Pit; Need Area for Seating
I moved into a new house at the beginning of April. It's slightly on the older side, and I've been working on various improvements to increase the property value/my ability to enjoy my home.
The back yard is totally vanilla right now except for an old satellite dish near my north exterior wall which I still need to excise--given summer is approaching pretty quickly (and that my house isn't all that large), I'd like to put together a decent place out back to have people over. Fire pits usually make good focal points, and I've already got the retaining wall blocks and legless metal dish to set inside the stone circle.
Thing is, I'd also like to have a nice, complementary seating area. I considered laying out a circular patio about 6'-7' around the exterior of the pit, but it just doesn't seem totally viable. I don't have a whole lot of money to spend on the project, a truck to carry machinery, super-easy access to the back yard, or a crew to help me excavate soil, lay down the sand & gravel, or to haul around all the stone it would take.
So, given laying out a full patio is a little out of my league right now, I'm wondering if there are any easier/cheaper options for getting paved seating around the pit. I'd honestly like to budget $500 or less for the whole thing, and am willing to forgo stuff like flowerbeds, walls, walkways, etc.
A picture of the back yard can be provided later in the day, but I'm in my office right now (~11:30 AM CST).
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

New to DIY, and wanted some advice restoring this cool backgammon box
Hi all, thanks in advance.
So I picked up this cool backgammon box that is in pretty good condition on the inside, however the inside has been bashed about a bit, it has some scratches and has one particularly noticeable chip to the front edge.
Here are some pictures: http://ift.tt/21gNMkO
As said, I am pretty new to this so I'm hoping it will be fairly simple. The one bit I'm worried about is the coca cola detailing as it looks like stained wood on the inside and I don't want to loose this (especially the trademark) after sanding, so any advice would be awesome.
Again, cheers, and I will keep people updated with my progress.

How would you sand this edge/ should I be sanding it at all!?
Hi, me again, I am trying to revarnish and maybe fill in a couple of cracks in this bowl.
http://ift.tt/1T6PtLF I'm sanding it with 120 sand paper but it doesn't seem to be working? Should k start coarser and go down? Should I go finer than 120 as it's a smaller more tactile peice.
Any advice is much appreciated.
Ps, have I ruined it?

What things should I consider before starting to build a 16'x20' workshop?
So as a background, I am in the process of moving onto a 25-acre piece of land. It comes with plenty of trees and maybe 5 acres of just flat fields. The soil is quite soft and arable, it rains a healthy amount- quite great. I love to work with wood and make stuff- it's always been a fun thing to do.Here's the best pic I got right now of the area around- http://ift.tt/1SRSIfU With all these trees, I'd think a workshop is a perfect thing to make.
Before I start buying wood and working out plans, what should I consider before starting surely a long DIY project? I know if I want some machines (drills, table saw, saw mill, AC, etc) in there I have to power the structure. For now, I was thinking concrete floors and very well insulated walls (maybe even a bit of sound proofing) at least, otherwise it's still in the air. I have checked with the local laws regarding building a structure this size and permits to it already. But otherwise, I don't know what think about much more than that.
With that said, any help will be very much appreciated.
Thank you for your time.

*URGENT* - Last minute home inspection results; need to submit response today [xpost /r/HomeImprovement]
Hi /r/FixIt,
I'm looking at potentially purchasing a home and wanted to get your input on a couple of potential issues that came up in the home inspection report we received yesterday. Unfortunately, due to the inspector's schedule, we only have until 5:00 PM today to submit an inspection response to the seller, so any input you can provide is appreciated.
Here is a link to the two inspection images that concern me: http://ift.tt/1rBJCrW
Picture #1: One of the main support joists for the deck in the rear of the house is not being supported by the 4x4s underneath it, causing the deck to sag. Does this seem like an indication that the deck was installed improperly (i.e. no concrete base)? Can the existing posts be jacked up and a concrete base poured, assuming they're in good condition?
Picture #1 Inspector Notes: Beam under deck is not sitting in 4x4 supports. See picture 3. Repairs are needed.
Picture #2: This picture shows one of the two 2nd story windows in the family room which has bubbling on the interior frame paint. To me, this is an indication of potential water damage. Would you agree? If so, would a general contractor be the best person to consult to determine the full scope of the water damage or should I be looking to a specialist of some sort?
Picture #2 Inspector Notes: Bubbling was noted in upper great room window frames. See picture 10. repairs are needed.
Picture #2 Additional Details: Another note that came up in the inspection report for the attic also seems to indicate that water may have been an issue at some point. Here is the inspector's note:
Evidence of prior moisture but no sign of active penetration time inspection.
Thanks in advance,
Brian

Heated floor manufacturer recommends a dedicated circuit...Can we get away with not doing this?
Our master bath is on the second floor on the opposite end of the house. The manufacturer (Schluter heated floor kit) recommends to have a dedicated circuit for the heated floor.
Per the electrician quotes..this is a huge P.I.T.A. With a 4.5 amp draw by the floor...why can't we use the existing 20 amp circuit that is shared by the bathroom outlets?
Thanks!
Here is the kit we're looking at, by the way:
Thanks!
