Making Homemade Wine

Ok, so I've been trying my hand at making some homemade Pineapple wine. I'm not that stupid, couldn't be that hard right? Just some fruit juice with some yeast and time. Well the first time I made some yellow(ish) coloured rubbing alcohol, the second batch came out much better but not sweet enough so I added more sugar, but that has just been used by the yeast to make more alcohol. How do I stop the yeast from producing alcohol and eating up all the sugar? My recipe was as follows:

About 750mL of fresh Pineapple Juice About 1/2 teaspoon yeast About 1 tablespoon of added white sugar 2 weeks to ferment

Having problems installing new range hood in my parents old house

(Disclaimer: Please excuse any dirt/grime in the pictures. As I said, this is an old house that hasn't been maintainenced in forever)

I was able to remove the old range hood with relative ease, although getting that ground wire un-twisted from the old ground screw on the hood was a little bit of a pain. But when I want to install the new hood, which has the same dimensions as the old, the flap on the new hood wouldn't fit into the old cutout in the wall(this is a 'through wall" installation'

As in, this: http://ift.tt/1ndh0Cc

Wouldn't fit into this: http://ift.tt/1UuXXAL

So now I'm kinda stuck and don't know what to do... I also had another question. The old range hood had a cutout in the back where the house wires would go through and into kind of a junction box area underneath the hood so you could connect the house wires to the hood wires. This new hood does not have that feature. The wires are just sticking out of the top of the hood like this: http://ift.tt/1ndh0Ce

Will I be okay just twisting the hood wires and the house wires together, capping them with wire caps, and putting electrical tape on them? Would that be safe? I thought the ground wire from the house needed to be twisted around a (usually green) ground screw on the range hood itself?

Thank you for any and all help with these two problems. I'm a little out of my element here.

Building material question about a "space shuttle" home movie theatre

Hi! I'm trying to figure out a way to turn my basement into a sort of space shuttle experience, with seats and levers and buttons to push. I'm looking for a type of material for the walls of the small room (big enough for about four seats), but I have no idea what to use. I'm thinking something shiny like melamine sheets, but I don't think those are thick enough to hold the decorative parts of the shuttle. What would you recommend? Thanks!

[Help] Trying to make a Raspberry Pi wireless radio with a 1960s radio box

Hey all, I've got this old FM/AM radio that my grandfather gave me about 2 years ago. It's in great condition, everything works, but I don't really listen to radio and I want to make this piece into something cool and usable.

I'm thinking of gutting the interior, putting a raspberry pi 2 in there, and making an AirPlay speaker for parties and hangout sessions. I can figure out how to get Volumio on the SD card and get everything up and running on the board; that's not the actual problem. I want to know if it's possible to have the Raspberry Pi power the speaker, and if so, what voltage/amp parameters I need to abide by. Any help would be appreciated, and if you think I should go about doing this some other please let me know, I've never actually worked with RPi before and it seems pretty intimidating haha.

TL;DR Can a raspberry pi power itself AND a speaker, and if so, how big of a speaker can it power?

Nevertheless. I need a program for my DIY project that lets me design patterns in exact cm/mm and then be able t print it out on a A4 paper. For example. I need to make a bunch of 3mm circle that are aprox. 1.5-2mm apart from each other and then print it out on a A4 to use as a template.

Need help with LED mounting behind TV. Pictures inside! Any help would be awesome.

Hey all. I am trying to mount these LED strips on the back of my TV and having some issues. They came with 3M strips on their backs, but the heat of the TV and their own weight makes them fall off pretty easily. I have tried adding some GorillaTape and then some Aluminum Foil Tape because it withstands the heat pretty well, or so I am told.

You can see it currently here: http://ift.tt/1LQBEhK

My question is this...Is this safe to do? I know the tapes are rated for heat well over 150 degrees Fahrenheit, and considering the tape is usually used for duct work, I assume there are no breathing hazards or anything with the adhesive...am I correct? I'd like to leave this as is if this is acceptable and not going to kill me or burn down my apartment building, but if it's horrible I am always open to new methods to do this...or I can scrap it totally, I am at my wit's end with this honestly.

The images aren't great, but it does a good job of showing the tape on the LED strips behind the TV, which is really the entire project.

Thanks for any help, guys and gals!

Filling in a dirt space at head of driveway: asphalt, pavers, something else?

Hello DIY, There is an area in the front/side of my house that is bare dirt in the winter and a weed patch in the summer. It also is a path for drainage of water from my driveway to the backyard. And the area is the only drivable access to my backyard and the riding mower must have access.

The area is approximately 7' deep and 9.5' wide. It faces due north and almost never gets sun. Images are here: http://ift.tt/1Lr5oaa http://ift.tt/1OJ0cJJ

The water from the driveway runs away from the garage/drive towards the gate and into the back yard. You can see a drain we installed between the drive and garage that connects to a pipe leading to a sink and then out about 50' into a drypit in the backyard (off screen). The drain is buried and runs roughly under the stone line (its actually closer to the wall). The downspout connects to it via a T.

We'd like to get have the area in front of the curved stone line (in front of the buried drain) to no longer be dirt. The area behind the stone line could be converted into a raised bed behind a short retaining wall (one almost buried level, two visible) to help prevent sloping of the dirt. Currently, the only things growing there are an azalea bush and some bulbs (to the side of the house). But what should the flat area in front of the small retaining wall be? Here are options:

  1. Extend the asphalt of the driveway forward (approx 4' deep by 9.5" wide). Nothing will be parked on it ever and only the mower will drive over it. Not sure if this is something we'd be able to do, but I doubt it. Patching asphalt I can do...pouring a slab, less so.

  2. Pavers (likely not the 16x16 flats, but brick sized or cinder block sized): easier for us to install, but the asphalt slopes down and I want to make sure there is a decent channel for water diversion.

  3. River rocks (those used to be there and I hate them). Not good when they encounter the snowblower.

  4. Other ideas?

We are in Maryland, FWIW. We are quite handy (the drain in front of the garage is our handiwork), so we like doing things ourselves. This is my first post, so if I've made any errors, please be kind. Thanks.

What should a mildly competent but unexperienced amateur do in a DIY home renovation, and what should be left to professionals?

Hi!

I've recently bought a two storey attached building, and I'm planning on a complete gut-and-rebuild style renovation.

What stuff could I do myself?

  • Overall design and planning (probably not)?
  • Structural engineering (definitely not)?
  • Basic framing (maybe)?
  • Electrical and plumbing (maybe bits of it)?
  • Drywalling, finish carpentry, etc (probably)?
  • Buying a rug to tie the room together?

I have successfully managed some basic DIY like building furniture, waterproofing a balcony, a slap-together IKEA style kitchen, and I think I'm best suited to woodwork stuff.

Here is a dreadfully rough Sketchup mockup of the current design: http://ift.tt/1QfvRGE

TL:DR; What can I not afford to screw up in a reno, and what can I take a stab at as a newbie?

Best drill for a child

So I have a son who is almost six. We have been building robots for the better part of a year now, but they have been mostly hot glue, breadboards, and so on. I've taking the lead with the parts that use power tools.

When it comes to drilling, I feel like he's capable enough to drill, alongside me, if he isn't using a power drill.

Do you guys have any recommendations on hand drills for kids?

At this stage, we just want to learn to work with wood.

Thanks!

P.S. I did a few searches, but I wanted to get some other voices.

Changing 3-way ceiling fan/light switch to separate fan & light controls

In my kitchen I have two 3-way switches controlling the ceiling fan and light. The two controlling switches are on opposite sides of the room, but what I'd like to do is split one of the two switches apart, adding a dedicated fan control, then tie off the fan portion of the other 3-way switch so it doesn't affect the fan at all.

The end result would be two 3-way switches for the ceiling light only, and a new switch just for the fan.

The problem is I can't identify the wires to control the light and fan individually. I've opened the fan/light fixture also, but there only appears to be one hot wire coming in from the ceiling (nutting together with what I assume are individual hot wires for the fan and light). Here's photos of the three areas:

Needing help: chipped the clear coat layer on my motorcycle helmet, how should I approach the fix?

It's a 1" abrasion mark with mostly only the clear coat being scratched off and some bubbling in the material which I think should be scraped off first. I'm thinking about sanding it off a bit first, use some Tamiya putty since it's not a very big mark and I have some understanding of painting hobby figures. Then a paint touch-up and lastly polishing. If I should be doing something else please suggest otherwise.

No power after tripping and then resetting breaker

I was installing new switches in my bedroom GE zwave switches. I messed one up and the ground/load came out of the receptacles without me realizing.

When I switched my breaker back on, it immediately popped back to 'off'. I put everything back together and made sure all of my wires were properly in place and turned it back on. I have no power to any outlets in my bedroom now. I unplugged all wires from the new outlets edit switches and turned the breaker on, off, back on again. Still nothing.

I can't find any GFCI outlets in that room and verified that the bathroom outlets in my master bath still have power regardless of my bedroom's circuit status.

Any advice on troubleshooting this would be terrific.

Question about drilling in cement / concrete

I'm trying to mount my TV on a cement wall. The first hole went without problems, but while drilling the second one I noticed that I just wasn't getting through. At first I thought it was a metal beam, but after inspection with a flash light it looks like a small rock embedded in the upper part of the hole a few cm in.

I'm using a pretty cheap drill with a hammer function. What I'm not sure about is whether I'm using the correct drill bit. I bought a Bosch drill bit for brick, can I use that in this case? How do I get past small rocks embedded in the cement?

Really appreciate any help on this.

Best paint stripper for tin ceiling?

Hey peeps! Looking to strip already peeling white paint off of a seemingly gorgeous tin ceiling in my kitchen. Wondering if any of you have a go to product, also welcome to any suggestions for finishing the ceiling after I strip it (glossy finish?)

Thanks!

Metal studs framing

Have to frame interior walls with metal studs, all videos seen so far only show putting up interior walls were one has access to both sides of the stud after putting it in the track. As one side will be against the interior wall only have access to one side once I lay the track (bottom and top). Should one make a frame on the floor (screw in the stud to the track)and then erect it to screw in the other side of the stud to the track or is one side screwing the studs in to the track sufficient?

Slow draining toilet - need help please!

So our toilet has been draining slowly all day. It takes about 1 minute to drain completely, and with no force at all which would be needed for solid waste. I tried plunging it for about two hours total throughout the day, and also tried baking soda and vinegar, and nothing is helping. Sometimes when plunging some solid waste comes back up, but it doesn't help the toilet to drain any better. I know people will mention a snake/auger, and I've tried using one a while back when the toilet was completely clogged (not draining at all), and it didn't help and we needed to call a plumber. That was a manual auger, but I found a power auger that I can rent and am wondering if this will be easier or more effective to use than the manual one? I'll include the link below, and any thoughts or advice is welcomed, as we really cannot afford to pay for a plumber again.

Help us! Roller alternatives!

I'm currently working on a group project where we need some sort of roller device similar to that which exists on boat trailers. We're curious if anyone has any cheap alternatives to these that we could buy in bulk. Thanks if anyone can help!

I've had nothing but issues with the keyboard tray sliders. Where can I get a fold out deal to install onto my desk?

Meaning, the tray folds out from underneath the desk as opposed to the sliders. Which ALWAYS break on me, coming off track, etc.
