/r/DIY Mod Applications
We're looking to add a few moderators to help distribute the load of work between us. We'd prefer someone who hangs out on /r/DIY regularly so they generally have an understanding of how things work around here. That said, we're not limiting to that, so if you think you'd like to offer your hand at moderating, shoot us an application.
Expected duties:
- Approve/remove posts based on the guidelines in the modqueue.
- Assist with modmail
- Monitor subreddit comments as you come across them.
In terms of frequency, it's basically as your time can permit. We are volunteers here, and we're all trying to reduce our collective workload by adding more people. The more quality moderators we have, the easier all of our jobs get.
In your application, please answer the below questions, along with a little bit about yourself.
- Favorite/Least favorite thing about /r/DIY?
- What would make you a good moderator?
- Biggest problem with reddit in general?
- What timezone are you in, and when are you generally on Reddit (in Eastern Time, please)?
- Where else do you moderate, and how has that experience been?
- What would you like to see added/removed from /r/DIY's rules/guidelines?
- What would your approach be when you need to communicate with angry or disruptive Redditors?
Please send your application to redditDIY@gmail.com.
We'll be reviewing applications as we go, but let's set a tentative deadline of June 3rd. We'll leave it up afterwards if we need to.
Thanks everyone!

Can I put new concrete over a section of an old concrete driveway?
I've mixed, poured, and spread concrete a few miscellaneous times at jobs, so I think I have that part under control. My problem is, I don't know if you can pour concrete on top of rocks, and broken up concrete. I have a concrete driveway, and about 10% of it is worn HEAVILY(sinking down almost 2 inches). It causes cars to bottom out on the driveway. As a temporary fix, I dumped some white rocks there, but there is still a great deal of lift needed.
Before I go out and buy more rocks, I was wondering if I could put some quick-crete over top, and spread it out, or if it would just crack instantly, considering it's being laid on rocks, and uneven, broken concrete.

Razer Kraken 7.1 Chroma Headset Review/Experience
I recently got the Razer Kraken 7.1 Chroma Headset and i am loving it! I played around with the settings and turned up the bass to about 70. Whenever i listen to music and theres bass in it, it feels like high quality speakers, not headphones. And not just that, the microphone has outstanding quality and my mates on skype think so too. Overall i rate this headset 9.5/10 the only thing that bothers me is the hissing sound whenever its quiet. But i always have something playing so it doesnt really matter. I would recommend this headset the anyone looking for a great mic and headphones.

How to print a newspaper?
Hi Reddit! I am working on a final project for one of my classes, and my group and I have decided to create a fake newspaper. We are going to write all the articles, sections, etc. and make it seem like a real newspaper. However, we don't know how we can print one. All the research I've done with companies only lets you print in bulk, and printing in small quantities seems to be pretty expensive. We only need around 10 copies or less. Does anyone have an easy way we can do this? We are looking at maybe standard newspaper size, but if our articles turn out too short, then half the height of a standard newspaper (3 papers, 6 pages). Thanks for the help.

[Evergreen, CO] Using steel fence posts on a slope
Hi DIY, I'm in the process of launching a fence project. I have a moderately sloped back yard (~5ft slope over 30 feet) and I'd like to use the Postmaster Steel Posts (http://ift.tt/25tC4FW). What technique should I use in creating a privacy fence with these as posts on a slope? Since these posts have pre-drilled holes, can I just create level cedar rails between these that connect at different levels on the posts as the yard ascends? Thanks in advance.

DIY ideas request: indoor solar powered heater!
I live in an old Victorian era apartment in Australia, which has no insulation or heating and is ball-spasmingly freezing in winter.
One side of our flat gets a lot of afternoon sun, so I was thinking of building some sort of solar heated device that captures the sun during the day and raises the temperature by even a few degrees. We have other floor heaters and whatnot but they cost a bit in electricity.
I found this idea for a beer can heater that's more designed for outdoors, would anyone have an bright ideas for something that can be placed inside against a window? We're upstairs so have no outdoor area.
Cheers!

Stupid question: #14 brass wood screws or #12 zinc wood screws... Which is better?
So, I am installing a small 'lip' to hold up a portion of a long desk against a wall. The desk is supported at both ends, but it is fairly long and to prevent it sagging, I am installing a small lip to help provide support against a wall. I have found two viable options for screws: #14 brass screws or #12 zinc screws.
I have read a bunch of stuff and it seems as though brass screws are really more decorative because they are softer, BUT here is my question: Is is better to use a larger but softer brass screw? Or a smaller but harder zinc screw?
If it makes a difference, the lip is about 1.5" and the screws are 3" long. If you take into account the drywall, the screws will each be approximately 1" into the stud. I can also get 4" zinc #12 wood screws, which would put me about 2" into the stud.
What's my best option here?
Thanks!

New house. One of the doors is too low.
So we moved into a new house and discovered that the door leading to the basement is hung just a little too low so that we can't put anything like a welcome mat or rug next to that door. It opens fine if the floor is bare but we really want to put a mat next to the other door that is next to this one. Everything around the door is finished so re framing is not really an option.
I talked to a local hardware guy and he said I could "shave the bottom of the door". Ideas?

Aggressive "bush" seeks to destroy my home.
Some months ago I discovered a crack in the brick facade of my home. Immediately next to it was a bush with a trunk the size of my manly muscular thigh. I figured its root system was the culprit. I promptly cut it down and stuck some herbicide in it.
Flash forward to now, and the crack has only gotten worse:
Started digging, and found the trunk goes deeper.. in the direction of my home. At this point, I feel like I'm out of my depth. Some specific questions/comments:
- Fire codes in my area will not allow for burning the stump. I wouldn't want to anyway due to its proximity to my home.
- If it were to be yanked out with a chain, am I correct in assuming this risks severe damage to my home?
- If I were to cut the stump down as low as I could, are chances good that the root system would stop growing?
- Big question:
Who/what service would be best to consult with on this? I'm not a particularly handy guy and don't want to get screwed.
I would appreciate any and all help I can get.

Trying to build a louvered fence but having issues with a *specific* style.
I wanted to build this style fence, specifically with the slats in the front as pictured. Did tons of research but only got feedback for traditional louvers panels, as pictured here. I would appreciate any feedback on how to specifically attach them to the front...not build the fence, not put in the posts, not how to attach the beam on top (I have those covered)....specifically the slats at an angle in the front of the posts. What tool is best to create an accurate notch at all the same angles? Should I use brackets for each slat? Thanks.

I built a shelf with a secret shotgun compartment, and instead of using stain to finish it I set it on fire:
This is my first DIY!
I recently discovered the Japanese technique of Shou sugi ban. This technique involves burning wood to a char to preserve it from insects, water and corrosion. I decided to give it a try myself so I took a pine 1x12 (reused from an old barn floor support) and made a shelf with a hidden shotgun drawer to practice the technique on. I left some of the twists and gnarls in the wood trim on purpose to give it a more "raw" and "repurposed wood" look.
I used a blowtorch for my fire source, and the entire project is only held together with glue and a single screw. The only tools I used where wood glue clamps, and a screw gun for the single screw.
Check out this wood grain after the fire got ahold of it:

More wood clamp clamping:
A few support screws are showing:(the mods made me say I use a screwdriver for this single 2" screw, apparently if you don't describe your screw gun some mod will delete your post for not being descriptive enough)
Made a strip of laminate to cover the screws with my table saw:
Glueing the laminate with wood clamps and glue:
More blowtorch fire to bring out the wood grain:
Then I lined the shelf with 2 layers of green burlap using glue and my fingers as a press.
Finally I rubbed the whole thing down with some lemon oil.
The finished product:
