Advice on how to divert water in my gravity fed shower
I have a gravity shower above the bath so behind the taps is becoming very mouldy and stained with calcium (hard water area). I'd like to put a shelf or something above the taps to divert the water over them and in to the bath, but I can't seem to find anything on the market for my search terms and can't think of what to make with what parts.
Could any of you throw an idea thanks

HELP: How can I set up an additional door buzzer in my 2 story apartment? Any help appreciated!
I currently live in a two story apartment. We only have one door buzzer to let people in from the street and it is located upstairs. The issue is we spend most of our time downstairs. We can hear the buzzer without any issue, but having to go upstairs when someone comes over to buzz them in is a bit of a pain. Does anyone know if there is a way to semi easily install an additional one downstairs without having to have major work done? I am relatively handy and will be able to accomplish if someone could give me a little guidance. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Anyone have good guidance on a whole house sediment style water filter?
I'm redoing my whole house, and I'm getting near the point of doing all the water. I would like to put in a basic sediment filter mainly to try to catch some of the crap that's in the pipes. I'm live with good city water, so this is mainly to reduce the picked up metals, etc.... Don't need a softener or anything like that. Any recommendations or general advice?
I will be putting in a charcoal filter in for drinking water, and hadn't planned on putting a whole house one in, but I can be convinced otherwise if there is a good reason for it.
Thanks.

Need advice on bathroom mildew removal.
For starters, here is an album of what I'm dealing with: http://ift.tt/1vK0rl8
In need of advice on how to handle this situation. I've tried various cleaning/remover methods to deal with this and none have worked (I'll list later). In my effort to clean I manage to strip some of the paint and was able to confirm that the mildew does NOT go through and into the wood material behind it.
There is no underlying cause to the mold so that isn't a concern. The issue steams from poor ventilation (no vents) and no one ever opens the window after taking showers which is what causes the moisture build up.
List of cleaning materials and methods I've tried with the result:
Hydrogen Peroxide and baking soda mixture - Seem to fade it a bit, done more to strip the paint than clean the mold
Various store bought mold/mildew removers - Didn't help the ceiling mildew but it removed the mildew on the grout in the walls
Heavy duty mold remover - Didn't do anything...besides this but a lot worse..guess I should of worn gloves
Tried sanding with really fine grit sand paper - didn't do much..some spots it lightened it up
Concentrated bleach with water - Didn't do anything
Followed this guide using Mr Clean Liquid Muscle - It was actually the best attempt so far. A lot of the brown smears were cleaned away. It didn't do much against the really large dark spots that were more set in though. May attempt to work with this more later to see if it can fully work. (Pictures were taken before doing this attempt)
With that said, is there anything left I could try to do to clean it? I've seen a few things say vinegar may work but I haven't tried it yet. As I said before, the mildew is only on the paint itself but it is pretty set into it so would removing the paint and repainting be a viable option?
Thanks in advance for the help..and sorry if this is the wrong subreddit.

Old GE Fridge Gasket
Hello,
First post to this sub! My wife and I just bought our first house, lots of things to think about suddenly, house is over 100 years old. Previous occupants were here 55 years! They left us 2 fridges, one of which needs a new gasket:
The model is LB-81P, from General Electric. All my attempts to find it on GE's website say model number not found. I know the fridge works, they had it on when we were first shown the place with frost in the freezer. The gasket doesn't meet all around the door though, and is almost certainly original. Where can I find the right one to replace it?
Thanks!

I work in IT but some of the equipment needs a tool set. The tools will get regular use but never beat up so so durability isn't much of an issue but obviously the more the bette
Option 1: spray paint a bright band around them all.
Option 2: colored electric tape around them. Option 3: use nail polish or a paint marker

Help with finding part for broken sash window cord
Hello. The cord broke on my sash window and there are plenty of guides online about how to replace the cord but they all suggest just nailing the cord into the window. In this case the snapped cord hooks onto a screw so that the window can be swung out for cleaning. Does anyone know what the crimp on the end is called or ideally can you link to a UK supplier I could buy it from? There's a pic in the link below. Can't seem to find it anywhere. http://ift.tt/1EVAIpK
An easier option I thought of would be to find a metal crimp like on the end of the cord and crimp the broken rope together. Again though I've no idea where to find this.

How to clean colored/frosted glass
Hi there - just got some new lamps for the kitchen from a reBuilt center and trying to clean them up. They are colored/frosted glass and seems they have some sort of coating that is peeling off.

Mortising Machine Purchase?
Hey Reddit DIY,
I am a novice woodworking. Getting more and more into it. Been very interested in mortise and tennon and have cut tennons on my table saw. The mortise is a lot more challenging. I've got a dowel jig coming to try and make it easier but thus far haven't gotten any to work out...at all. So my question is this. I found a mortising machine that is $175 used, might be able to bring them down some. It is a Delta 14-650 that comes with the chisel bits that originally came with the machine. Is this a good purchase for someone of my skill level? The machine was not rated well on Amazon. Should I work on other skills before dropping the money for something like this? I can put a link to the CL post if anyone is interested.

Laminate Flooring + Waterfall dog drool = Help!
So we adopted a 6 year old great dane named Maci and the end of last year, and the adjustment period is just about done. The one problem we have, is that the dog food and water bowls are sitting on laminate flooring.
As we all know, dogs are drooly, sloppy mess makers full of love. She will chow down on her food, gulp down some water, and run off, leaving behind a masssiivvee trail of water that has started to take its toll on our laminate flooring.
What we have done so far:
- Neater Feeder + raised legs Cut down on the initial slop over from the bowl
- Giant mud room boot tray (super hard plastic with a decent lip) under the neater feeder, in front of it, so that when she lifts her head up, that catches the initial dripage)
- Slobber rags both in front of the boot tray and ALL OVER THE HOUSE. The second she is done drinking, one of the house members has a rag at the ready.
Despite our best efforts, we are still finding the laminate flooring starting to warp a bit. I am thinking our best bet is to move the dog stuff, clean, polish, sand and seal the laminate, but I am looking for options before going that route.
Per the sidebar rules
SO. I beg of you /r/diy. What have you done to protect your laminate flooring against the waterfall effect that is a thirsty dog?

My first shed build!
Hello!
Not my usual account, as I'm not looking for points, just a conversation!
This is my shed I built, and kids playhouse/toy storage I built last summer. Sorry about the album being large but I took these pictures in case it needed inspecting (I'm not required for it here, but a new homeowner might be interested in these for verification). I'm looking for things I can improve on, this was my first build, and although I am proud of it, having done it by hand by myself (hanging the trusses alone was the most difficult part), I know there are things I might of missed.
Some info not pictured, the 8 posts its on are in concrete 12"(or more) wide by 2 feet deep, as you'll notice with the subfloor mounted it's just slightly off, getting those posts square was a HUGE pain in the butt and because the center had a bunch of stumps there I used a 4x6 to assist the support. Shed is 12x12, deck is 12x14.
Some materials used, 15 year roofing, and reclaimed cedar from 50 years ago from inside a mechanics shop (as you'll see some oil stains on the playhouse), This was a fun project and I learned quite a bit, I don't do trades and learned everything from either trial and error or those handy Youtube videos!
I wanted to share, because Reddit. I got a little lazy with the playhouse build, deck, and fencing and did not take too many pictures. Deck was installed with 8 block posts, fencing 12" by 2ft concrete (just to hide the compost piles behind it). I do know some of my measurements were off by an inch, throwing some of my flow off, lesson learned! Looking forward to any questions and tips for my next one, thanks for reading.
I am also sorry for my spelling, potato camera, and general internet/grammar uselessness.

Cost effective way to make a flaking chrome chair base decent looking? Is sand and paint my only option?
My wife purchased a vintage Eames lounge chair replica off craigslist and the base of the chair is rusted and flaking badly. I believe the company is that made the chair is CoFeMo. What would be the best way to make things base look decent (doesn't have to be perfect) without breaking the bank?? Thanks in advance! http://ift.tt/1E0oiQb http://ift.tt/1AOxJi5

Advice on how to remove steamed on fabric stain from countertop
http://ift.tt/1LMT7cb The above is an image of my bathroom countertop. I had one of those Ikea fabric storage containers sitting on it storing some bottles. The other day I lifted it up I noticed these stains and I cant remove them with anything! I'm not sure what material the counter is but I think it might be some kind of Quartzite material. I've tried glass cleaners, bleach and even magic erasers and it is still there. I'm assuming somehow the dye from the fabric transferred to the counter via steam/heat combo while showers were taken, but not entirely sure. I'm moving out and am worried the landlord will charge me for replacing the whole counter if I cant fix it. :( Any advice is greatly appreciated!

How would I make rounded corners for a silicon mold
Hi DIY redditors. Long time lurker, first time poster here in /DIY .
I am making a silicone cast of a farmhouse sink for my home remodel. I am trying to figure out the easiest way to create the outer and inner rounded-corners of my "positive."
For the inner-sink shape, I was thinking of using quarter-round and gluing/pin-nailing to the side pieces of the melamine board. Not sure how i would do the outside rounds.
If anyone has any tips or shortcuts, please post!
Here's an example of one of the sinks that has rounded corners: picofsink

Painter help?
Hey guys, I've been having issues with bubbling in my bathroom, now I realise that the paint has no sealant beneath but what's this... Bubbly stuff?
What's the best solution here? Should I strip the whole wall and seal with a product, then repaint?
Thanks for any advice!

Changing the way an exterior door swings
Is it possible/easy to change the way an exterior door swings?
In our previous house, we bought a new exterior door, and had an all weather proof dog door installed. When we moved, we replaced the door and brought the door (and frame) with us so we could reuse. Unfortunately, the door that we want to replace is a left-handed inward swing and this door is a right-handed inward swing.
Is it possible to change the way the door swings by moving the hardward? Or will we need to buy a whole new door/dog door. I know we can just replace the door and have it swing in as intended, but I think that would look silly and be awkward with the current layout.

Need some help making a light stand using 202 Stainless Steel.
Hi guys, I'm new here and also new to metalworking. So, I'm trying to make my own light stands using 1.5mm (approx 1/16th inch) thick, stainless steel 202 square tubing. I need to drill a total of about 150 holes in this stuff.
The first problem I faced was that unlike aluminum, this stuff is a LOT harder to drill through. So, I got some high grade HSS drill bits (Miranda Super Drill Bits [Indian company]) and still find that it's pretty hard to drill and I have to apply a LOT of pressure. I'm drilling using a Skil 6510 handheld impact drill and have been using coconut oil as a lubricant. So, I was wondering if:
I would find the drilling easier if I were using a drill press?
What kind of drill bits do you recommend?
What kind of cutting fluid/ cutting oil would you recommend?
Any more advantages of a drill press that I should know, other than accuracy? Does it reduce the effort required to drill?
How many holes should on average should my drill bit last in this stuff?
Should I get a bench grinder to sharpen my drill bits, or can an angle grinder somehow do the job? (I'm guessing the answers's no, and this would be REALLY dangerous, right?)
Thanks a lot for your patience guys. :)
EDIT : Formatting.

How would I go about building this $640 shelf on my own for much cheaper?
I saw this shelf on a modern design website for $640. I really like the shelf (not enough to spend $640) but moreover I like the concept itself. I wanted to learn how to make something like this myself as I have other conceptual ideas I want to try. Do you just wet and layer thin sheets on a pre-curved mold? I'm not sure where to even begin.

First time home owner making some upgrades and looking for some advice. First "major" project that I have some uncertainty about: replacing the humidifier on my furnace. (x-post from /r/homeimprovement)
As the title states my wife and I just moved into our first house in Hamtramck Michigan recently and one of the first things I'm going to have to do that I have little to no experience with is replacing the humidifier on our furnace. I'm looking at a Honeywell that looks VERY similar to what is already installed.
I would wager to guess that either the humidistat, the wiring between the humidistat and the motor, or the motor itself is faulty but considering the condition it is in I'm just going to replace the whole thing. Since there's already a unit there, I assume I can get a similar unit and pretty simply put it where the old one was.
I just have a few questions. I've bolded the actual questions below.
The one installed now doesn't work, and god only knows how long it hasn't worked for. What sort of things should I look out for as far as mold or anything like that goes. I'm not sure if there was ever standing water in it but there's calcification on the pad around the drum so I assume it sat for quite a while. I don't see any signs of mold anywhere in the house or in any of the easy to see/reach parts of the duct work (including the duct attached to the humidifier.
The humidifier I'm looking at (HE120 Bypass Drum) plugs into an outlet for power. The one installed now is somehow wired into a circuit board in the actual furnace with some sort of transformer. How hard will it be to disconnect the current humidifier from the furnace circuit board?
Another "problem" I've noticed with it is that the water only comes out as a slow drip when I open the saddle valve. Should I replace the saddle valve? Could it be sediment inside the line from the valve to the unit? If so how can I test it or should I just buy some new copper tube to go with the new valve?
I don't really want to take anything apart until it's time to actually replace this thing (next week) but if you want general pictures I can take some if they'll help.

[Question] Passive Solar Heating
I had a simple question for you all. I'm currently designing a home and wanted to pick your thoughts regarding this idea of using passive solar heating techniques to warm the home through light absorption during Winter months. The technique would involve a massive wall made of stone painted black serving as a heat battery of sorts. I want to install thermal windows in the ceiling to bring in natural light.
My question is this: would the addition of such a solar heat battery be rendered null by the addition of a large glass window (assuming thermal windows would otherwise be replaced by an insulated roof)? Would this work in my favour increasing the temperature or would it work against the broader goal of warming the residence?
During Summer months, I think it would be neat to include large curtains that cover the black stone wall to prevent the light from being absorbed and heating the place more than just the natural light already does, so there wouldn't be the problem of an overly hot Summertime.

What constitutes an induction heating circuit?
I've read about a method of heating using eddy current created by high frequency AC flowing through a coil and I want to try demonstrating the effect at home, but I am unsure how such circuit is constructed. Could someone give me an outline of necessary components and their roles in the circuit?
