Can I ignore the ground wire?
Not in general. Just in my specific case.
I am renovating the kitchen and wanted to add an accent light above the kitchen table. Paying an electrician to run electric isn't in the budget, so my plan was to use a plug in pendant light similar to this one:
I couldn't find a prefab plug in pendant light it a style I wanted, so I decided to buy the one that matches and a 2-prong cord so I could make my own.
I've gotten everything and was ready to put it together when I noticed the pendant lamp has a ground. Under normal circumstances I'd be running the ground to the electrical box, but I'm not using a box/hardwiring it into my house electric.
Sorry for the long story, but is it safe to ignore that ground? Every lamp I've ever used uses a 2-prong plug, so I should be able to here, right? If not, where should that ground be going?
Thanks in advance for any help. I want to make sure I'm safe, and electrical scares me.

Moto G4: The budget smartphone king
I'm surprised I haven't seen mention of the Moto G4 here. The One plus 3 got to the front page, and while it's an amazing budget phone, the Moto G4 is aiming a little lower on the spectrum.
Currently Best Buy is running a promotion, where pre-ordering any version of the phone also nets you a $50 giftcard.

Pricing for the regular model starts at $200, while the plus starts at $250. The big selling point for me is the android experience, which is as close to stock as you can get (without going nexus).

How to build a small doghouse for a chihuahua?
So I have a small chihuaha who's only about 5 pounds so she's fairly small. My sister, dad, and I have been wanting to build her a simple, small doghouse for whenever she lounges outside (Oregon so it's mostly cold but it is hot during the summer). Anyone know a website where I can find plans on how to build one? We have no experience at all building stuff, and we don't have any type of power tools (<--is that even the right term?). We only have plain old saws..but we can probably go buy necessary equipment if we need to.
Thanks(:

Can I use self-leveling cement as my floor?
I'm renovating my basement bathroom. I'm going for a very industrial look and was planning on having a layer of concrete poored as my floor (by a professional). Doing the floor prep myself (with the help of a semi-pro) we installed, in order:
-
3) This self-level cement. We pourred between 1/2" and 1" all around.
We played around with the self-leveling cement to give it this look and, at this point, I really like the finish and would like to know if I could simply apply some sort of epoxy/protective material to keep it as my floor, without any additional concrete or tiling? This is also the shower floor, so it will receive tons of water over time.

Suggestions on a geode display board, please!
I have a bunch of geodes and will have more in the future I don't want to just box up. Being a renter, I hesitate to put a bunch of shelves up. Pinterest yielded a search result of using pegboard to wire wrap a rock collection and display that way, which I loved. Also being frugal, I was hoping to turn a cork board I already own into a "pegboard" myself. It's pretty thick (maybe half inch) with a cardboard backing, and perfectly sized (32 inches by 24 inches I believe). Would it hold up, or should I just get a real pegboard? Thanks in advance!

How do I reconnect my phone?
I've just had a new front door fitted but there was a wire that ran through the door frame that went to a connector block on the inside. This had to be disconnected as it was mounted on the frame that was going to be removed, neither the fitters nor I knew what it was.
It turned out to be a BT 20/4 connector box from the late 50s (old house). It looks like my phone line was going through this and I get my Internet over my phone line. I'm posting this via a hotspot created from my phone. It's a simple connector block with 4 screws either side, the problem is the fitter just disconnected it without opening it up and seeing how it was connected first. As far as he was concerned it wasn't his problem, he was just there to do the door.
So now I've got to reconnect this thing but I don't know how it was supposed to be done. I've got ancient wire in the form of 2x cables, each with 2x wires at one end and a modern colour coded phone cable on the other. How do I do this? Any advice appreciated!

Need a Solution for Patching Crack/Hole in Foundation
After demoing the wood panels in the basement of my 1910 house, I found a decent size hole in the foundation. It's filled with tightly packed dirt. I've been digging it out, but am unsure of how deep it really is. It's possible it goes all the way through the foundation.
Here's a photo:
It's a couple of inches tall and a little more than a foot wide.
I've been researching various ways to fill this whole. At this point, I'm planning to use rapid set cement, but am curious if there is a better solution. Also, do you think it's safe to continue digging out the dirt? I don't want to compromise the structural integrity of the foundation.
Thanks!

I want Reddit's help designing my backyard
Hello Reddit!
As the title suggests, I would like the help of Reddit users to design my backyard.
At the end of the year I'll be getting married and in the beginning of 2017, we'll be constructing a livable backyard. I have a pretty good idea of what we want but I want to do it once and never worry about it again. Here are a few wants: Dinning area Living area Cooking area Fire pit
I'd also like to do this as cost effective as possible. I'm talking, newlywed budget not Blog Cabin budget. With that being said we'd kindly take donations. Lol
Using Reddit's mobile app I can't post pictures of the existing backyard.. I hope to get some pictures later today to give you guys an idea of what I'm working with. For now, to give you an idea... The rear of the home is 75' facade with a 10"x10' slab in the dead center; the rest, open yard.
Thank you for reading my post and a big thanks to anyone willing to put in their ideas.

Need Help Finding Replacement seat of counter stool
Someone stood on one of my counter stools and the cushion broke (dent in the middle). I flipped the chair over, unstapled my fabric upholstery, unscrewed the seat from the frame and threw it out. The chair looks something like this: http://ift.tt/294LNwC
The cushion has a tapered shape and had a "hard" bottom - a material like cork or thin plywood, to securely screw it in place.
Now I am trying to buy a replacement seat online. Every combination of "dining chair seat" "dining chair bottom" "replacement chair seat", etc, is only yielding results for soft cushions, pads, pillows - I am really struggling to find what I need.
Does anyone know of any online sources or stores to replace this seat? Thank you

DIY Sous-Vide Help
First off I am trying to build a DIY Sous-vide based off Make's http://ift.tt/1mstqOT However, I fell confident in being able to build it but when looking for materials I am extremely confused by one thing. The Temperature Controller and all the specific needs. I have tried looking at a few options to see if they would support Voltage Pulse Output ( A guideline Make says the Controller needs). All I was wondering if is anyone more knowledgeable then me could maybe tell me if any of these support Voltage Pulse output or point me to some options that do. Here are a few temperature Controllers (They are both bundles because I needed the other parts to but, truly just looking for any options that meets the guidelines): http://ift.tt/290mLw6
I apologize ahead of time if this is the wrong subreddit for this question but if anyone could answer this or point me to a better subreddit that may help that would be so greatly appreciative. Thanks in advance.

Oil Based Paint Tips
Hello,
I've only done water based / latex paints before. I just put a coat of primer on a cabinet (sanded and cleaned) and it's so incredibly streaky. I know one coat isn't enough to make it look great, but I'm just not sure if more coats will help or if I'm doing something wrong and it'll just compound. It looks really uneven and almost like you can see every single brush stroke. The paint is so thick it feels hard to get a good even coat. Is this common and more coats will fix it, or am I missing something?

Wiring CAT 5e into a wall jack
Hey DIY
I'm running new CAT 5e into my dad's new office and will be mounting it on the wall as opposed to in a wall-flush socket (this is basically the unit).
Because of its size, I couldn't snake the old unit through the walls so I cut the cord, ran it up, and now I have the fun task of putting the 8 wires into their respective homes.
Only problem is, I don't know which position relates to which number.
Here are two pictures (of the unit, and a schematic) to show you what I mean:
If I buy a similar 4x2 unit, do I just assume I put all the colors back in the order they are in the one pictured? If I buy one of the other units (8x1, straight line) how do I know which wire goes to which number?
Thanks!

Swiveling base for sand digger
I'm in the middle of building a mobile sand digging toy, and I can't quite grasp a decent way to build a base that swivels 360 degrees. I'm building it with a 1x2 square tube holding the seat and arms and a 2" diameter round tube going from the bottom of the square to the future base. On the base, I'm not sure how to achieve a smooth swivel action. I could slide it over a 1 3/4 round tube, but I feel that would be sloppy and eventually wear down. I'm trying to avoid using a boat seat swivel, or butcher and office chair swivel. Any way I could easily incorporate bearings into this build without butchering existing technology? Fixing a warped tool chest

Got this sweet rolling tool chest for $75 because it's bent. All the drawers slide fine, so sweet deal right?
The thing is warped and it rocks which is pretty annoying. I can't figure out how to bend it back into shape. I've been hammering on it in what I think is the opposite direction of the force of impact, but I can't seem to make any progress.
I really want to get this thing to stop rocking and get the top of it nice and level. My backup plan is to just throw some washers under one of the wheels to stop it from rocking, but the top won't be level.
So, any metal workers in here got any tips or do I just keep hammering?

Your thoughts on liquid sandpaper (liquid deglosser)?
It seems like no one uses liquid sandpaper. I've been looking all over the place for reviews on using this product, but they are few and far between. Even the instructions on the can of liquid sandpaper seem off, like it was created in a non-English country.
Have you ever used liquid sandpaper? What are your thoughts? Why would you promote using traditional sandpaper if you prefer that? I am curious to hear about some personal experiences!

Need help building a solar powered fan
Hi Reddit. I am more of a carpentry/plumbing/masonry guy and electric scares me a little bit (also more of a lurker than a poster). I have been trying to expand my knowledge and lean some things about electrical. My first project is a solar powered fan that is going to run 24 hours a day. The basic stuff: I am going to be running a bank of 12v computer fans off of a solar panel. The way that I have it laid out is that that the solar panel (12v, 10 watt) will charge a 12v battery. The battery will then run the fans. I have the battery being directly wired to the solar panel. the fans will be wired in parallel.
I am unsure about the sizing for the battery and the panel. I think that the solar panel have to produce more power than the fans consume in order to charge the battery. also the battery should be large enough to power the fans overnight, correct? I did some research online and there are several conflicting articles. I should/should not use a voltage conditioner. The fans and the panel should/should not both be wired to the battery leads. there should/should not be a controller in place. I am very new to electrical and any advice will be appreciated.
